Does anyone know if Omnicef (Cefdinir) is a safe drug for porphyria. I don't know if I have porphyria. I suspect this may be a possibility.

I have already checked the Porphyria drug lists ( http://www.porphyria.uct.ac.za/druginfo/drug-frameset-alpha.htm and http://www.porphyriafoundation.com/drug-database and http://www.porphyria-europe.com/03-drugs/selecting-drug-safe.asp?strCaractere=o#liste )but this one is not listed at all. If someone has some info specifically about this drug and porphyria, please reply.

thanks

For a basic CROSS search, go to Google Advanced search and to increase your chances use - separately - for cross search terms to any Rx:

P450, porphyria; cytochrome

Still, even if not on the "unsafe" list, any drug can pose trouble for someone with porphyria. Sorry I can't explain that but it's all here:

Cefdinir/omnicef is one of only two antibiotics I can tolerate with porphyria (the other is low dose doxy). It had the least side effects/reactions for me... I love it [Smile] . I can't take amoxicillin or zithromax at all (the only other two I have tried)

Herbs15... thanks for replying. I was hoping someone with porphyria would respond. That is interesting that you cannot tolerate amoxicillin which is listed as a safe drug. Zithromax is listed as unsafe for sure.

I am glad the omnicef is working out for you. Lyme and coinfections are bad enough without having other complications to deal with!

thanks

And thanks again, Keebler. I forget the obvious things sometimes.

I was also very surprised about the amoxicillin... Just an eight of a pill three days in a row gave me all my usual porphyria symptoms (stomach pains, weakness, that anxious head intensity, palipitations, dark brown urine) - the same symptoms that anesthesia gives me.

I didn't have any trouble with ceftin or Rocephin either - so i am thinking most of the cephalosporins are safe for me. I also don't have any trouble with very small doses of Loloestrin birth control pill- and I know I should - but if I try to decrease my carbs/sugar then I do get pretty bad porphyria symptoms.

I hope you have lots of success with omnicef! I do have to take daily nystatin with it or I get stomach cramps... Otherwise it has been a great antibiotic for me [Smile] . You could try ceftin first since you can cut that one up.

Take care [Smile]
