I'm in desperation mode on my weight loss. I just can't gain weight/muscle.
My testosterone levels, when checked, were normal (low end though).
I know it's Bart/Myco/Lyme - they've destroyed all of the muscle in my body.
Ready to hear how bad it is... canefan17 (30 year old male, former HS basketball player & STRENGTH COACH for a junior college) can only do 6 pushups before my body gives in and starts shaking
I can only do 8 squats before legs give out and start shaking
Eleutherococcus & other adaptogens used to help me gain weight and muscle... it was great. But over time they've lost their effectiveness.
What's a skinny boy to do? Posted by beaches (Member # 38251) on :
What about lifting weights? What about eating more (good) carbs? Try making a milkshake in the blender with ice cream and and a raw egg (that's how my mom tried to put some weight on us). Eat full fat yogurt instead of low fat. Eat a cheeseburger or two!
If those things don't work, I'd be more than happy to donate my fat to you...

Cheeseburgers & ice cream would really irritate my stomach. And I eat quite a bit (to everyone else's amazement) but my body is constantly in a catabolic state due to these damn infections.
Posted by beaches (Member # 38251) on :
Have you tried taking digestive enzymes when you eat things like ice cream and cheeseburgers? You might not be able to digest fats so taking the enzymes could help.

I use a lot of ginger which really helps.
When I'm having Bartonella flare ups my weight plummets immediately. :/
It's a combination of so many things.
/there's a possibility I subconsciously started this thread just to vent & bug you guys (no pun intended)

Have you done a comprehensive stool analysis? If so, you might find that you cannot digest fats or carbs or whatever, hence my suggestion for digestive enzymes.
In addition to that, you might want to explore going gluten-free. You'd be amazed at how much you can eat on this diet!
Ginger is a great addition to the diet. It helps nausea for sure.
I hope your intent isn't to bug ppl here. I have a kid who's suffered for years with horrendous GI stuff. And I'm more than happy to share whatever I can to help others.
So if you're all about BS pls let me know b/c I'll stop posting on your thread. Don't have time for BS.

How about protein: Quest bars Whey protein isolate
BCAA's (branch chain amino acids) help muscle endurance.

What kind of a diet do you have now? It's hard to say what changes to make without knowing what you're currently eating.
Have you worked on the health of your gut so you digest food better? Doesn't matter what you're eating if you're not digesting it.
Some ideas:
fermented foods for probiotics a colon cleanse (I like Dr. Natura) parasite treatment (one that will also address bacterial dysbiosis if you have it)

Cane, I have 10 lbs to give to the cause. I know what you mean about old Bart getting you going and the weight seems to fall off. That would be difficult if one was already thin naturally.
I'm not. But I'm sorry I can't spare any muscle. TG my body is holding it's own with muscle tone.
I too thought of parasites. I'm just starting my glm1111 education on that topic.

I'm right there with ya' brother.
If you find an answer let me know and I'll do the same if I find a solution.
Like you my testosterone is OK.
I am trying Deer Antler Velvet. It hasn't helped yet. But I haven't finished my first bottle 1oz. of tincture.
Have you tried Creatine or the Muscle Tone blend Buhner recommends from Woodland Essence ?
I'll probably try Creatine next. If you've tried the Muscle Tone blend let me know.
My strength loss started after my symptoms went neuro. After a year there was noticable muscle loss.
Have you been following Will Wiegman's thread ? I now wonder if I have blebs in my nervous system.
Gotta' get the blebs out !

I haven't tried the Muscle tone formula yet. Buhner did recommend it to me.
I eat gluten free, I try to avoid carbs due to being on abxs (candida etc). But oddly enough I feel best when I eat carbs and lots of them. I start putting some weight on (even if some is due to candida) and I have more strength.
I've done all the anti-parasitic treatments, minus pharmaceuticals, in the past to no avail. In fact I may havemade some things worse I don't know.
I have adrenal and sleep issues (hence why I respond so positively to Adaptogens). But the sleep is great when the infections are completely under control. I can tell. When they come out it doesn't matter much what I do.
I've thought about trying creatine too (Burrascano recommends it) but then again I don't know if it's that safe for Lymies. Don't we have to worry about kidneys. Anyone here use it?

I think some people need more carbs than others. If I start eating too low carb, I do well for a couple weeks, then start getting fatigue. When I listen to my body and add more carbs (healthy ones), I feel so much better!
You might need more carbs than you're eating. I don't mean a high carb or bad carb diet, but it sure sounds like you're not getting enough.

Sixgoofy,
What are healthy carbs for you?
Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :
Vegetables....
Have you tried avocados?
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
Sometimes that is not enough and I eat a bowl of gluten free oats with a grated apple, butter, and cinnamon. Corn is my "cheat" ... organic blue corn chips, quinoa/corn pasta. Corn doesn't seem to affect me negatively like other grains do.

Thanks! I'm surprised you were able to get away with regular potatoes. Maybe it's because you weren't doing abxs.
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
Not only that, but regular potatoes seemed to be a really good food for me. I ate them with the skin, I don't know if that makes a difference.
Even when I was on abx I could eat them. Maybe it helped that I usually browned them in butter then added a half of an onion when they were almost cooked. Onions are a good candida fighter ... and I never had candida.

TaiChi

Did some tai chi the other night w/ my gf. We both liked it.
Thanks for all the advice in this thread.
I bowled a 185 the other night! My highest bowl since starting not too long ago.
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
185!!! That's amazing! I'm lucky to get 85!

Have you tried arginine ?
It's needed for muscle building.
And Buhner says some Myco species scavenge arginine from the body.
It's on my list of things to try.
Posted by canefan17 (Member # 22149) on :
I haven't because isn't that an amino acid that can flare viruses?
Posted by LuluBelle (Member # 38865) on :
Buhner says to not use it if you have active, herpes, chicken pox or shingles.
Can it activate something which is dormant ? I don't know.
