I have some organic kefir and yogurt that I bought before I saw the NP. I was told no wheat and no dairy. Does kefir and plain yogurt count as dairy or are they permissible? I love that stuff and hate to see it wasted. What about goat's milk?

According to 23&ME DNA testing I should not have a problem with gluten or be lactose intolerant. I am going to do this for awhile to see if I feel any different.

How long should it take to see improvement if either of these is an issue? So far I don't notice anything.

Hey Neff, I think this may any your question...
Interesting, I think it may depend on the product.

The primary reason for recommending a dairy-free & gluten-free diet is that the proteins in gluten and dairy tend to promote inflammation.

Also, there is a strong prevalence of dairy and gluten sensitivity (i.e., milk and wheat are common allergies).

However, if it were me, and I knew I didn't have trouble with wheat or dairy, I'd finish up those foods first before starting the dairy/gluten free diet.

I'm on the Body Ecology Diet and it does not allow dairy or gluten (among other things.) For that reason, dairy kefir is not allowed until you are on Stage 2 .. or maybe later .. not sure.

They use coconut kefir and cultured vegetables.

So in answer to your question, yes, yogurt and kefir are considered to be dairy.

Razzle is correct that the main reason some people have to avoid gluten and dairy is because of the inflammation they cause.

Many with inflamed guts are not able to handle those.

Lactose is not the real problem with dairy.

From the above link:

"Both yogurt and kefir are beneficial cultured dairy products that can perform different, helpful tasks in the body."

Actually there is nothing wrong with my gut. If anything causes me a problem it is soy. It sounds to me, from the link steve posted, that kefir and yogurt are just what I need to replenish the beneficial bacteria the abx is killing.

So I am going to eat that last quart of kefir. The dog can enjoy the yogurt (it is plain). He loves it. I have an ice cream maker that I make frozen kefir with. It is blueberry sweetened a little with agave.

I have given up so much already. Being on a low fat diet is hard enough. If it isn't absolutely necessary I don't need any more restrictions. But I will do this for awhile and see if my mind gets clearer. I don't have pain except for headaches but that is typical of bart.

Thanks for the answers.

Avoiding dairy; I've had that same question for quite some time re. Kefir and Yogurt.

Now I know!!! And like someone wrote, this is a huge part of my diet. What to do? What to do?

But I would also like to know if Whey has the same inflammation (it is milk) problems and should be avoided??? Thanks!

I don't know, Seren. It depends upon how sensitive your gut is. If you have an actual sensitivity to dairy, then whey is OUT.

I just ate my last bite of frozen organic blueberry kefir. Yum. Do I have to do without this? I am giving it a couple of weeks.

I don't know. We are all different.

I doubt frozen kefir has any live cultures in it. (?)
