I was going to start taking this again, but my insurance won't cover it because I don't have a positive blood test for malaria.

[Frown]

It's very expensive, even on some Canadian pharmacy sites. Anyone know of an inexpensive source?

Thanks.

I know that whenever I've had to pay for my prescriptions I would price them out and Costco was always the cheapest

Not "Canada" cheap but lower than anywhere else.

Good luck with this! I'm on this now, too, and I think it's a great medication

Skies,

I just this week finished updating the Babesia article and it was reviewed by a doc, so it is ready to go.

It gives a source for free mepron and malerone- Bridges to Access. You can find a link under the section- Babesia Treatment.

Hope that helps.

Here is a discount coupon/card for Malarone. You can use it if you have insurance (and they won't pay) or don't have insurance. This website/card can be used for other meds too.

http://www.rxpharmacycoupons.com/malarone-coupon.html

I clicked on the pricing button and entered my zip code (don't know yours). This is the average cost for Malarone at 6 pharmacies in my area.

Malarone Tab 62.5-25 $87.36

Just for fun, here is the price for a bottle of Mepron.

Mepron $209.14

BTW- I do hope you intend to fight your insurance company's decision.

Insurance Issues. Of course you tell them right off that you, as a patient with a choice, follow the ILADS Lyme & TBD Diagnostic & Treatment guidelines. If they give you any stink...

The IDSA 2006 Lyme & TBD guidelines say (about babesia)....

"All patients with active babesiosis should be treated with antimicrobials because of the risk of complications (A-III)."

"Longer duration of antimicrobial therapy may be necessary in highly and persistently symptomatic patients until parasitemia is cleared, but no controlled studies exist that define the risk-benefit ratio of more prolonged
therapy."

Sounds good to us but brick walls don't have ears much less brains.
