i have a CBS mutation, i never did the 23andme test but i have some questions regarding the drug... my doc wants me to start bactrim and im afraid that i will get the same symptoms that i get from garlic, MSM, too many eggs or other high sulfur foods: foggy thinking, slow mind, tiredness and the feeling of low ATP and ammonia.
i also have a wrecked gut from antibiotics and i cant seem to repair the damage. it really is slow and i never get back to the baseline. it feels leaky, slow and still hurts a bit. my doc says he suspects that its also the infectons causing this, not just yeast.
What do you think? Worth a try? I have muscle athropy, general CNS symtpoms, everything screams bart.
Another line of symptoms is that i get blurred vision all the time (didnt have it in the past) with floaters and sometimes itching. Is this candida which is from the gut ?!
Im currently on cowden, artemisia and some other stuff like KPU treatment. It all seems to help, but i really dont know if its enough. Lately im feeling very depressed and angry since starting the artemisinin. Pain is also worse which means die off i think. I have severe Chlamydia and Lyme/Co.

Can you try rifampin and zith instead of bactrim?
Or rifampin and mino?
Also levaquin is effective for bart, although it is one of the nastier side effect abx for tendon damage.

I wouldn't touch the Bactrim if I were you... I have the CBS mutation also and I can't get near any sulfa drug.
Greta has some good suggestions for alternatives...

Noooo!!! Run. Seriously. I have the CBS mutation and took Bactrim back in the fall - 6 days worth screwed me up for months. No. Not worth it.

I agree. If you have the CBS mutation, then please avoid sulfur drugs! You dont want to overload your body with ammonia and deplete BH4 and neurotransmitter levels.

Last time I took a sulfa drug, I broke out in a rash all over my body. Doctor told me never take sulfa again...I'm allergic.
More recently, sulfur from just about anything (food, meds, air) seems to send my body into anaphylactoid reaction (dizzy, neck/head pressure, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, exhaustion, etc.)...

wow this really sucks razzle. im extremely reactive to anything just like you. it really sucks. im sleeping outside in a tent because i suspect a mold problem in my flat. strangely i started to react after being on abx for a long time....

What test tells you if you have this mutation or not?
Is it obvious from the test that you have it, ie, is it positive or negative, or are there gradations?

I don't have any reds on my CBS report, but I do have +/- on a couple. I have no problem with Bactrim but I did the first time I took it in college. My doc desensitized it with me by giving me baby doses over a week building up to one tablet, after that it was no problem.

I don't know if 23andme checks the CBS SNP's, or which one(s) they check.
Yes, the test will report whether you have 2 (+/+), 1 (+/-) or 0 (-/-) mutations on each CBS SNP tested. Anything but 0 (-/-) on any tested CBS SNP means there is the potential for you to have trouble with sulfur (including one or more of these: high sulfur foods, sulfite preservatives, sulfa drugs, etc.).
Two mutations on any one SNP (+/+) is more significant, as would 2 SNP's with one or more mutations (e.g., +/- for both CBS SNP's tested by Yasko's test).
I have a double CBS C699T mutation (+/+), which supposedly upregulates the CBS enzyme 40 times normal. I believe this is the source of my sulfur (and multiple chemical) sensitivity, as the increased CBS activity overloads the downstream enzymes (SUOX is one of these, and SUOX processes sulfites & sulfur amino acids).

You might have proto (fry bug), and I say that because of your depression after art. Artemisinin hits it. Once you start attacking proto, bart symptoms flare.
Since you have a CBS mutation and can't process ammonia, it doesn't make sense to take something to aggravate your brain. I have CBS mutation and can tolerate some sulfur, but not bactrim.
Floaters and blurred vision dramatically improved When I took parasite meds, which by the way treat proto. A-bart helps my bart.

Catgirl, while I did not experience a bart flare on artemesinin, I did on DEC. So agree with you. Now the question is, did the DEC (or artemesinin) kill protozoa, or bart, or both?
