I've tried everything. abx, sinus meds, otc, mucous thinner, you name it.

Are you sure it's not any of your BP meds?

I had a full cardiac workup before my surgery including a nuclear stress test and some kind of gel wand thingy test.
have not had a lung workup yet tho.
holding off things until the bills get settled from the surgery.

Hi Randi--I have a chronic cough too. Lying down, and especially bending down, are also worse for me. Nothing worked until I was recently referred to a pulmonologist. That made a big difference: he's got me 50% better.
So when you've settled the bills from your surgery, a lung workup with a pulmonologist would be a really good idea.
Mine put me on 4 medications to cover different possibilities. I think the most effective one is IC Benzonatate (200 mg capsules 3x day), which numbs the stretch sensors in the lungs: http://www.medicinenet.com/benzonatate/article.htm
Another possibility is that it's a cough caused by acid reflux, which is also worse lying down. This pulmonologist recommends Tagamet for that--finds it works better than Prilosec.
Has it been worse over the past few weeks? I don't know about Texas, but in New England this spring's been brutal for pollen. Apparently you don't even have to be allergic to it. Just breathing in all that pollen can make you cough because of all the particulate matter in the air
Good luck, Randi!

Chronic fungal sinus/lung infections can cause a cough like this, too.
