Our 21 year old son is getting a port next week and then starting on 2 grams of rocephin twice a day and 1 gram of Doxy once a day. He is being treated for anaplasma phagocytophilum (erlichia) and lyme. He will start at home and then plans to return to school. His main symptom has been a severe headache 24/7 for 20 months. I'm thinking that will get worse if he has a herx (hope he does actually). Any suggestions for detoxing during IV (milk thistle, probiotic),pain relief, comfort measures? Also, what we can expect as he starts the meds. Ironically I did 3 months of rocephin in 2001...but honestly do not remember much!!!
Thank you so much!!
Linda

I think doxy especially should be infused slowly.

Everyone reacts differently to abx. Rocephin made me very sleepy. Most do well with it.

Probably want to be taking actigall to protect the bladder.

I agree with poppy that Doxy should be infused slowly.
If your son doesn't have waterproof bandages to keep the site dry when showering, he can see one brand at http://www.aqua-guard.com/
If he has a nurse change the port needle, I highly recommend making sure the nurse has a lot of experience accessing ports. There is a numbing cream available, such as Emla, that can be applied about an hour before accessing to minimize the pain.
I hope your son does well with his treatment!

Here is a link to some herx information that may be of help. hope so! Good luck to you and your son!
BTW- If he gets cranky and nasty, he doesn't mean to. Kind of comes with the territory. So hold onto your hat mom!

He was prescribed ursodiol for his gall bladder...will check into actigal. Ordering the waterproof bandages and cream. He plans on going back to school. I'll warn his sweet girlfriend about him getting grumpy, but think she has already been there!!
Thank you for your posts! When I was sick it was tolerable....when its your child it is so different..so your support means more than you know! Also, for what it's worth, I am 95% back with the daily use of herbs. If I had not had Lyme, we would never have recognized his symptoms!!! All things work for the good!!

I started with 1 gram of Rocephin infused slowly, then worked up to 2. I don't have a port, I get it in my dr's office, but if you can infuse slowly, it might be a good way to start off.

Ursodiol is generic Actigal.
If your LLMD is not versed with liver support or other supplements, you might consider consulting a naturapathic doctor.
My son started treatment just before college, so we changed plans and he didn't go away, but lived at home and went to school nearby. I know having a child with Lyme is tough. Good luck.

He got the port on Tuesday and started IV yesterday (Wednesday). The port is very sore....nurse said it's because he's in good shape without body fat! Doxy is being infused over 4 hours with a pump! Can only do 100/mg an hour.
Thank you Sammi for posting about the Emia....we used it.
