In my search for a good heavy metal detox protocol, making very little progress with the Cutler protocol, I came across the work of Dr. Shade. He presented a very good view of the human detoxification system. His main point of interest is Mercury detoxification, but i believe most of his theories apply to all chronic disease detoxification, heavy metals or not.

The interesting part is he explains some of the reasons why the human detox system gets disregulated (primarily by inflammation, genetics) which can be a major cause of heavy metal build up or other cellular waste products in the body. He also provides strategies to upregulate the detox system by gene promotion (Nrf2), mainly by using phytochemicals such as quercetin, egcg, haritaki and other polyphenols. Eventually this leads to increased expression of antioxidants, the entire glutathione system (so not just glutathione itself) and other cellular protective mechanisms.

His protocol also uses binders for the metal to prevent enterohepatic circulation of mercury and other metals. Perhaps lymies could also use different binders, like chlorella.

I think the work of Shade is excellent for people who want to know more about detox in general, or who get stuck with any kind of heavy metal detox (like the DMPS/DMSA chelation). While he does have a commercial interest, his scientific explanation is absolutely incredible, so take the information for free and see what you do with the rest.

The short 1hour version of the presentation he is giving:

This is the basics, and remember its oriented around heavy metal detox, but many things apply to detox in general.

Then there is a longer 2hour interview with Mercola:

You can find more info on Mercola's website:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/01/13/mercury-detoxification-protocol.aspx
This also covers a lot of the basics, and adds some additional information, like the role of oxidative stress to up regulate the antioxidant system. Very interesting!

If you want the full "practitioner" experience, there is a five hour presentation split in 5 videos:
Part1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC7Ce2PPl7s
Part2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJXGP5-FGMM
Part3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-rDMDjBqlk
Part4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH_7rfYCvKc
Part5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRqatJOAVjs
Lots of details of the protocol he uses, including dosages and timing of supplements.

One of the interesting things he mentions is that gene upregulation should be pulsed, like 5 days on / 2 days off. Otherwise the effect of upregulation by Nrf2 wears off and you get no benefit any more. The off period is also used for remineralization.
Also of interest is the role of the transporter enzymes in detoxification. I think this is an aspect of detoxification that is overlooked by lots of other detox protocols. He calls this transport mechanism "phase 3" as an addition to the well known phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification processes.

Hope you find it interesting and learn a bit how to upregulate your own detox mechanism!
