According to Braggs site:

Certified Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is unfiltered, unheated, unpasteurized and 5% acidity.

Contains the amazing Mother of Vinegar which occurs naturally as strand-like enzymes of connected protein molecules.

and from wisegeek.org:

People into home remedies and more holistic healthcare have long believed that mother of vinegar has many health benefits, especially antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, thought vinegar was a powerful elixir and used the mother to fight common germs.

Today, popular uses of vinegar include losing and controlling weight, improving digestion, and soothing dry, sore throats. Some people also use it externally to soothe the pain of sunburn, prevent dandruff or itchy scalp, and maintain healthy skin.

The people of the Philippines even use sweetened mother of vinegar to make some of their traditional desserts.

It is increasingly rare these days to see natural vinegars containing mother on the grocery store shelf.

Because of its unappetizing appearance, the large companies that produce vinegar use the pasteurization process to refine, distill, and clarify the vinegar to get rid of the mother.

Many people believe, however, that the process that kills the mother also kills all of the special nutrients and health-promoting properties of the vinegar.

Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar containing mother can be found at most health food stores.

It is an inexpensive addition to any kitchen pantry, and many people swear it is worth every penny.

Just the mother of vinegar itself can be found at stores catering to home brewing enthusiasts or winemaking supply merchants.
-------------------

Mother of vinegar is definitely not mold. Mold is more furry, usually white and/or blue. The mother is more smooth and shiny.

However, vinegar or it's container could get contaminated by unclean practices such as insects like fruit flies getting into it or having a dirty container and then you might get some mold.

If it helps dandruff, then it's not moldy.

Ty

Can you use braggs for salad dressing ? I just drink it hot with honey like tea...i think its supposed to make you less acid

Yes you can use it in a salad dressing just like any other vinegar. Olive oil may not be the best flavor pairing, almond oil, walnut oil and other less strong tasting oil would most definitely taste better.

I use it for everything.

but one time I got a bottle and the mother grew into a large being. it was gross and tasted horrible. and I threw it out. I am talking like one of those animals in a jar of formaldehyde in a lab gross. I don't know what happened to that one to make that happen. been using this stuff for decades.

LisaK, I reckon that "large being" is a scoby like they use for Kombucha.

I have a big one in my Braggs bottle of vinegar that is about 5 years old. I keep using that bottle and add more fresh Braggs to it to keep it alive. It does not taste bad though. If it did I would throw it out too.

yes, look up it was an old bottle I found in the back of cabinet and thought I could still use it, so maybe that was it- just old?

LisaK- it was having so much fun in the back of the cabinet! Had it's own little life going on, he he.

Kayak .. It may make SOME PEOPLE less acid, but for me it only ADDS acid.

It cured my migraines along with coconut water kefir I use it all the time.
"mold" isn't bad per se.
yeasts are everywhere. you're eating yeasts every time you eat a fruit.

I contacted the company a couple of years ago because one of my bottles got moldy and it wasn't even close to the expiration date. (Braggs Liquid Amino Acids)

They told me although it doesn't say refrigerate, you maybe should if it is getting moldy and to discard the bottle if you suspect mold.

They also said purchasing a smaller bottle might be better for me, as little as I use. It is hard to use something that smells and tastes like soy sauce on a lot of things.

They even sent me a replacement bottle for free, and when I opened the box it came in the bottle slipped from my hand, hit the edge of the kitchen counter, and the entire bottom broke out. Just like when a quart mason jar blows, the entire bottom circle broke out.

I had that sticky, strong smelling stuff all over the kitchen- even on the windows and of course across the entire floor.

But, yes, it can get moldy and should not be used. The bottle in my fridge seems to be doing just fine.

lymetoo, I should say this too..... I cannot drink the vinigar , i only use it in cooking. It makes me burn. I have had mixed views per drs I see about this. some think it's because the cider vin is helping with eliminating stuff, but it was just too much for me to handle like that.

I gave it to my daughter once and she said it made her 'dizzy'.

Tincup, I love the enzyme stuff. just made strifry last night and sprayed it all over

Lookup, I agree, lucky you have a scoby in yours. Lisa, it really is a good thing like in kombucha. Very healthy, lots of nutrients.

ACV (with the mother) actually helps me to detox better. Sometimes I get dizzy from it, but that is the release of toxins, just like when I'm detoxing heavy metals.

It supplies my gut with the amino acids it so desperately needs to do this. It also makes me more alkaline (good thing).

well, it didn't taste like vinegar any more. it tasted like excrement. not something I would enjoy no matter how good it is for me. Is it supposed to have tentacles that fill the entire jar???
YUCK! I only use it in recipe, like I said. it bothers my stomach.

Posted by lpkayak (Member # 5230) on :

Ok lisa, how do you know what excrement tastes like

I dont think it gives me reflux...ive been paying attention

I hope it gives me something good. Im working hard to eat better. All fresh whole foods i fix myself. But its a lot of work.and if a worker is here i cant always do it

hahaaa KAYAK, ok, so it tasted like the SMELL of poo. [Smile]

it doesn't give me reflux (a non poo bottle) it gives me burning sour stomach and burning urine that is like fire. whether this was a temporary sx or not, I couldn't persist at that time.

maybe I will try again in the future when I get more of my body evened out

I do believe in it's 'powers' though. I just wish I would have started drinking it decades ago when I was more healthy to stave off all this beastly stuff and then maybe it would have been more tollerable for me??
