My doctor's aid said that I was supposed to be scraping off the coating on the outside of the nystatin pill because it was harmful to my health in some way. Has anyone heard of this?

It contains food colorings and some are sensitive to that. Maybe it contains titanium dioxide? Just a guess.

You can get Nystatin in powder form, but I hear it is nasty.

Find out the exact ingredients from the manufacturer's direct website or call them.

Get powdered nystatin instead. There is no way to really get rid of the coating (especially if gluten) and you could cut yourself. Sand paper would work better (a fine grade) but who knows what's really holding that sand together?

If not gluten and you just want to get most of the color off, soak for a little while and rinse and chase it down with water.

Better yet, OLE. Way better for me than nystatin or even diflucan ever was:

Thanks for the responses guys! I definitely do not have the time to wipe off the coating on each tablet before I take it. Planing and taking all of these pills and liquids is already time consuming enough!

I'll have to call and see what he meant exactly by his comment.

The inactive ingredients can be in the coating or in the pill, itself, to hold it together. The three kinds of dyes are more likely in the coating but could also be in the pill (some dyes even help to obtain a white color).

You could search beyond this to find out exactly what is in the coating, though this is a start:
