Hi guys so I recently started taking Malarone for my babesia.

Question 1- Many people have taken this every day for months on end without issue, right? Doc says to get my liver enzymes checked every 3 weeks just to be safe- sound about right? Is there any significant risk of long term liver damage? I was thinking of taking 1200mg of NAC to help with liver support.

Question 2- speaking of liver damage...does anyone think it would be ok to use Cialis while on Malarone? I have issues in that "department" and would like to use Cialis if possible while on treatment. I noticed that like Malarone, Cialis uses the Cytochrome P450 liver pathway to detox out....just wanted to be safe.

I did find this relevant study however:

Thanks

"The duration of treatment with atovaquone combinations for Babesiosis varies depending on the degree of infection, duration of illness before diagnosis, the health and immune status of the patient, and whether the patient is co-infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. Typically, a three-week course is prescribed for acute cases, while chronic, longstanding infections with significant morbidity and co-infection will require a minimum of four months of therapy. Relapses have occurred, and retreatment is occasionally needed.

Problems during therapy include diarrhea, mild nausea, the expense of atovaquone (over $600.00 per bottle enough for three weeks of treatment), and rarely, a temporary yellowish discoloration of the vision. Blood counts, liver panels and amylase levels are recommended every three weeks during any prolonged course of therapy as liver enzymes may elevate." (page 24 of Burrascano Lyme Treatment Guidelines)

As you can see, testing liver enzymes every 3 weeks is the recommended precaution.
