Just wondering.

I've had mild tinnitus since becoming ill with Lyme in 2010.

It is constant and mild. I can usually ignore.

I was diagnosed with Marcons in my nasal passages a few months back and was Rx'd BEG spray from Hopkington which has Gentamicin in it. (The "G" in BEG spray.)

The amount of Gentamicin is very small.

Just wondering if you would take this if you had tinnitus?

Yes, I would still take it.

Personally, I would, but I like gentamycin. It has always helped me.

The eustachian tube and sinuses are directly connected. Hopefully, ear health (and tinnitus too, if it is caused by ears and not brain signals), will improve when sinuses aren't loaded with staph.

BEG Spray stings like the dickens apparently, but seems to help folks.

You probably already know what is to know, but I find this website helpful.

Would mupiricin do the same thing as the BEG?

I get rid of tinnitus by taking one Ginkgo tablet a day. It takes about 4-7 days of taking Ginkgo to kick in and start working. I first learned about the Ginkgo remedy by reading an article in "Tinnitus Today."

No, I would not use the spray if it contained gentamycin.

You should be able to have the gentamycin replaced with another antibiotic in the spray. Infuserve did this of me for the same reason.

Call the pharmacy and tell them your situation and they will custom make you a formula that will work for you.

Using the spray moved me forward quite a bit. Good luck!

Thanks all.

Unsure..the problem is the Marcons is only susceptible to Gentamicin, Vancomycin, and Bactrim. I'm allergic to Bactrim.

My culture also showed I had Pantoea Allgomerans in my nasal cavity, which is also susceptible to Gentamicin, but not to other drugs other than Bactrim which I can't take.

So it seems Genamicin is the only drug to get both of these.

I continue to treat with my AK doc, but have lingering ear/sinus pressure on one side and I'm wondering if its because I haven't dealt with the Marcons / Pantoea Agglomerans that was cultured from there.

Curious here, as I have used BEG spray, and may again, and also have tinnitis that comes and goes ...

What is the problem with gentamicin? Something specific related to tinnitis?

Michael,

It's an ototoxic drug. It's one of the most ototoxic drugs there are, actually. [for bcb, though, as you say, it's not a high dose and my thought for you are below]

I'm unfamiliar with BEG spray. You might do best to consult a neurotologist. You might just call one and ask to speak with the nurse at a time not busy for them.

And also check out any inner ear or vestibular support groups. Then, maybe find out what Neil G. Bauman might say. His books on "Ototoxic Drugs" are key yet, as the use in the nasal passage, I don't know if his books mention that. And I am just too tired to look right now.

He does have a Q & A function on one of his websites, Google will help you find that, or near the end of the most recent posts in the Tinnitus thread.

One concern I have about it in a nasal spray is if it might get up into the ear tissues. That could be very bad then.

I know when I use eye drops, my throat also gets all that and my sinuses, as I can taste it. The soft tissues that "divide" the vestibular system are just that, soft and it's really not a "divide" in any sense.

So, my question would be if any Rx will reach through and get into the nerves in the vestibular area. Is it about how much - or about any at all - if a drug is toxic to ear nerve and if that drug gets to the nerve?

Could be like a match touching skin, or a Q-tip with acid touched to the skin - it would burn even if not much of a flame or not much acid, or even in a small area.

And, yet the reality is that MARCoNS is a very real concern, too, and assertive direct treatment is warranted.

You pose an excellent question and I sure wish I had the energy to research this as it's the kind of thing I like to do.

If you find out more, please come back and share. Maybe others will still have more detail, too.

As for the suggestion that Ginkgo can help tinnitus, yes, IF it is about lack of circulation - not if about damage to nerves from ototoxic agents.

Any drug or substance that causes increased tinnitus is a sign that it could be ototoxic. Other symptoms could be brain fog, balance, coordination issues, too. The vestibular system is involved in all we do: walk, talk, sing, think, write, etc.

When from ototoxic damage to ear nerves, there is very little can help after the damage is done. Lion's Mane, a particular medical mushroom may have some slow healing properties to nerves, though.

Ototoxic damage is best to avoid in the first place. Yet (yep, another "yet") infections can also be very ototoxic so it's a tricky puzzle.

Also be sure to know that many Rx can cause hearing to be damaged at MUCH lower decibel levels for months even after stopping it. Detail in the tinnitus thread.

I do not have a brand to suggest but you might seek out good brand of colloidal silver nasal spray as one to consider.

Maybe see if you know someone with a rife machine for treatments of MARCoNS?

I second Tulips. I would take the BEG and some ginko. You can always ask your AK if they would work for you.

I called the pharmacist at Hopkinton Drug to discuss this, as I was very concerned about the gentamycin too. He convinced me that it was worth taking because my infection (marCons) also showed sensitivity to gentamycin. He told me it was such a small amount, and targeted for a specific area, that the risk was very small.

I took BEG I spray for 2 months and it did not worsen my tinnitus. It did get rid of the infection, but my symptoms, unfortunately remained about the same.
