dr said cough could be reflux so he wants to put me on ppi's for a couple of months.

tried aloe, zilch; enzymes, nope; marshmellow nope.....nothing worked.

I've heard ppi is not a good idea.

what helped you? still waiting to have lung scan.

randibear, if I recall correctly, you've had more than one experience with c. diff ?

If so, it's very important NOT to take a ppi. PPI can make c diff much more likely and so much worse. Anyone with a history or propensity towards c. diff. should have this written in their medical charts, next to the allergy / avoid cautions.

Have you been properly assessed for h. Pylori? This matters greatly. Even if you were assessed back in time, it would be wise to get assessed again, now.

PPIs - Proton Pump Inhibitors - Cautions - Links set . . . includes other ways to address

C difficile - prevention

Also avoid PPI Rx [Proton Pump Inhibitors]. They have been directly linked as a contributing "set up" to c. diff.

PPIs also have other risks aside from this issue.

Just stumbled upon this in today's news, although there may be a connection to h. Pylori as an underlying agent.

you know my sister has been on prilosec for years, I mean like 5 or more. she's also been on ativan for over 10 freaking years. (I'm down to .25 now)

she's developed big tumors or growth like things in her stomach. has trouble swallowing and coughs a lot. so they give her an inhaler for asthma. dr said growths not a problem.

she's having real pain eveywhere. now she's having steroid shots in her knees for arthritis.

I told her to loose weight. she's waayy over 200. didn't appreciate that tho.

but my cough jus hangs on. my sinus or something does drain tho.

I can fully understand that your sister would not "appreciate" being told to loose weight. That kind of directive can be very hurtful, shameful and make her less likely to share her pain when she might really need to talk about it.

Hopefully, as a society - doctors and lay folk - will someday come to see what a very serious medical symptom excess weight is and that for each person, there are likely a dozen different disease processes / dysfunctions going on there and unless the underlying stuff is addressed, weight loss can be nearly impossible for many.

Suggesting delicious foods that happen to be mostly "from the earth" and prepared well with herbs, etc. - well, for many who are told to "just loose weight" ["it's your fault"] sort of thing as society does . . . they think they should starve.

Sure, some with excess weight might choose more convenience foods but it's my thought that maybe that's because they are in such pain & exhaustion that it's the most practical short reach.

Sometimes, being sure they include delicious foods can be a start to that part of the healing process . . . Foods can heal, or at least help heal.

Suggesting avoiding processed foods / additives might be more specific and helpful to lessen inflammation.

My guess is that much of excess weight has to do with inflammation.

Suggesting also enjoyable activity (even if not physical, just things to get one out of the house, say art or music) . . . anything to add enjoyment to life - seem suggestions that may make more of an impact.

For what it's worth "steroid shots in her knees" well, that, alone, can make weight loss nearly impossible for various reasons. Weight "holding" is a hormonal problem and steroids are a disaster to the entire hormonal system - for at least six months after a shot.

She knows it would be good to weigh less but being told so can be such an intense emotional pain and dismissal. Believe me, there is not one person more than two.five pounds "over weight" who is not aware of it.

I would hope that - someday soon - we will all better understand the complexities involved and see it not as a character flaw at all.

For many, various chronic stealth infections / inflammation, etc. are at the root of excess weight.

Why not try Zantac or Pepcid first? I wish I were on one of them .. not Nexium.

But.. I digress...

I found d-limonene quite helpful, so that may be worth trying:
