please help!!!! I have been on mepron for three weeks and have noticed that I am crying all the time. I am also having severe air hunger with anxiety. My llmd put me on ABABS this week also and took me off Zithromax. If this all herxing or what? I am miserable and need your help before I go out of my mind.

Yes, you are herxing out of your mind! Give him a call and/or stop a day or two.
You have to detox and give your body and brain a rest .. as needed.
This is not medical advice, consult your MD.

thank you, I thought so too but when I called her she said nothing about detoxing???? she suggested I go on an antidepressant or a mood stabilizer called lamictal. I am not doing either. Do I drink lemon water to detox? Please help as I need to get through this treatment.

lindadanis,
You must incorporate detox therapies to rid your body of toxins overload due to the killing of pathogens.
Here are some ideas to add to your treatment protocol.
You can research each one here at lymenet. Just click on 'search' engine button and type in your question. A list of replies will appear from members who have tried these methods. Good luck and hope your suffering passes soon.

Bonnie gave you some good detox methods there. No need to do all of them.. choose what fits for your purposes.
When I was herxing, I would stop taking meds when I needed to.

just spoke to my llmd yesterday and she said there is NO WAY I am herxing on this small amount of medicine. 1/2 tsp mepron twice a day and two drops ABAB TWICE A DAY. wELL I SAID, I AM HERXING AND FEELING LIKE CRAP. SHE SAID IMPOSSIBLE AND TO START AN ANTIDEPRESSNT TO DEAL WITH THE ANXIETY. COULD I BE HERXING ON THIS MEDICINE ALREADY. THANKS FOR ANY RESPONSES.

Anybody can herx or react to anything. Try some detox, and if you feel you should, stop treatment for a couple of days.
You'd be surprised how much detox helps; it's essential when your dealing with these infections.

I am also week 3 into a mepron combo for babesia. I last did this combo about 15 years ago and I recall week 3 being the worst. It seems that way this time so far. You are taking 750mg atovoquone/day. Certainly enough to herx.
I will never consider interrupting this type of therapy. Babesia develops resistance. Your best chance of eradicating the parasite is with an initial high dose continued therapy.

Yes, you can herx on ANY amount.

I can herx on a 1/2 teaspoon of Mepron a week! And many other things too, even in very low doses!
And I mean the nasty "I'm gonna eat worms and die because nobody loves me" Mepron blues herxes.
Your doctor is WRONG! Normally I am not that aggressive in saying so, but you can and do herx, especially around the third week and it can be absolutely horrible.
Here is some info to help you. It also has some quotes from LLMD's that your doctor NEEDS to see and pay attention to or they are gonna end up seriously hurting people or killing them.
BTW- I agree with others who have suggested stopping your meds until you have cleared out the toxins.
A "herx" for some people is a couple days laying around on the sofa and they don't "get it" as to how bad this can be. For others it can be severe and even life threatening.
And if you ended up in the ER, the first thing they'd do, besides look at you as if your head is purple and your ears are green when you mention Lyme or Babesia...
Is to stop all meds you are on.

This Babesia page has a warning posted on it (scroll down) about "Mepron Blues".
It lists some of the symptoms and has my little version of a pep talk included!

Also, if you go to the ER, not only will they not know what to do with us, but they often try to pry info about your Lyme doctor from you, so they can report them to the state medical board.
Of course, in an emergency, you should go to the ER, but beware of the above---the dreaded L word, and all the rest.
And, yes, it's egregious that your doctor doesn't know this about herxing!

This. I learned this over time. You do not ever stop when you herx. All that leads to is 1) resistance and 2) reoccurrence or revival. The herx is not going to kill you. There are a few people on here that trot out the 'Herx is going to KILL YOU so stop' thing. This is in my opinion a fabrication and you can find slim to any evidence supporting that. It is an indication that your body is actively fighting the infection and it's a good thing.

Badtick, can I ask you how much mepron you take daily and also are you taking anything else with it? I was on Zithromax but couldn't tolerate it so she took it out and added in ababs. Is this going to get rid of my babesia, do you know where you have treated it before? why does it come back after all those years? I am new to this and confused. thanks and thank everyone who replied to my post. I appreciate it.

For those who think herxheimer reactions are not fatal in some cases, just read some of the medical literature.
" The Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction is most often observed when diseases caused by spirochetes are treated with penicillin or tetracycline.
In louse-borne relapsing fever, which is caused by Borrelia recurrentis, there are often large numbers of spirochetes in the blood and tissues, and the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction is very common and often severe;
....it is fatal in some 5 percent of cases."
--------------------- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2041950 In leptospirosis, a herxheimer reaction is both CAUSE of morbidity AND mortality, as well as an indication that the therapy works.
In other words, if it does not kill you, it is good for you.
------------- I did a new thread on that, so that I don't steal this thread.

I am on the standard dose 1tsp 2x day. I went through the severe anxiety too. Stick with it. It was well worth it for me.

Brussels said... "...if it doesn't kill you its good for you."
Made me laugh! Thanks for the link. Good info.
And here are quotes and sources about herxheimers in the event anyone is interested....
