My doctor prescribed omeprazole and I’m looking for alternatives. He believes I have a hiatal, hernia and possibly reflux. Can anyone recommend a safer alternative?

Ask for Pepcid or Zantac. These are H2 blockers, alot of GI docs are starting to prescribe these instead of PPI’s like omeprazole or Nexuim.
If you take them twice daily, at your doctors prescribed dosage you should see gradual symptom relief & long term symptoms control.
(H2 blockers like Pepcid & Zantac can be found over the counter, dose on bottle is intended to help with one time rare episodes. When you have ongoing symptoms please see a doctor, recommended daily dose typically far higher).
If you have severe ulcers in the stomach or small intestine the medicine “Carafate” will help you heal in a very short time. (This medicine is used to rapidly accelerate healing of ulcers, it’s only taken for a few days).

Another great reason to get a script from the doctor for H2 blockers is that equally effective genetics are available & ultra cheap. Many insurance covers for free or very close. These are very helpful meds so most pharmacy chains fill these in 3mo quantities for a couple dollars.
I have taken very high dose Pepcid, famotidine, twice daily, for a few years now. It’s helped tremendously.
Before I started this med, I was being hospitalized every couple months due to severe GI bleeding in the stomach & the small intestine. I was scared because every scope we did, my condition was worse....
Thank God for a new doctor & a better plan.
I have also taken the medicine Carafate, when you’re in bad shape it can help to accelerate the healing process.
Take care

Get away from PPI's.
I was on Nexium for 6 years and had a hard time getting off. My LLND doc said it was due to my stomach acid being too low...not too high.
So now I take HCL with Pepsin capsules before every meal and my stomach has never been better. Ever.

I wish I had just taken pepcid or zantac back when I was prescribed PPI's. Now I can't get off of them.
