I have a woman friend who was bitten by a tick about a year ago. I told her then she should get checked out by a competent doctor. But he scoffed at the idea (we live in Lexington, SC). In the intervening months she has suffered from rashes at the bite site and elsewhere over most of her body, hair-loss, temperatures that have reached 105 degrees peaking in late afternoon or evening, feelings of fatigue, head and joint aches. To me, that is enough to warrant a more careful examination for Lyme Disease, but (she's now in a hospital) the doctors won't do it; they're currently testing for CVS! (she does not have AIDS!). Symptoms in addition are: the tick bite is still visible (after nearly a full year) and while the classic bull's-eye is not apparent, the area looks like a bruise about 1 inch in diameter and purple. I think her medical treatment borders on criminal negligence. Can anyone recommend a competent doctor in this area? I have talked to two nurses here who have close relatives (father, sister) who have Lyme and they said they had so much trouble locally getting a diagnosis that one went to Wisconsin, and the other to Charleston (SC) before they received the proper diagnosis

So sorry your friend has had such a rough time. I'm in Columbia. What hospital is she in?
Is she able to travel? She really needs to be evaluated by Dr J or his staff in NC. If she takes an appt with the NP, she'll get in much sooner, which is important.
Please call the Lyme Disease Network of South Carolina. We'll help you any way we can. Hotline # is 798 - LYME www.sc-lyme.org
Hope to hear from you soon.
