Anyone here know who is working in the taxonomy of Bartonella? That is, describing new species and variants of this genus, etc.? Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly though that book looks very interesting (we'll see what Fry Labs says about me in a few weeks....).
I am actually looking for the name(s) of someone who may be in the process of describing some new species of this genus, and publishing this in the scientific literature, not the popular media. Thus, a biologist instead of a medical practitioner.

I have no specific names to give you.
However, if it were me looking, I would try a few things, such as:
1. checking out the J.S. book and see what information and references he is using, and then check out those references.
2. using pubmed to do the same, i.e. what is published, and who is publishing, and who are they using for references.
3. also much information is coming from vet schools, such as NCSU...Brechwelt??sp??? I remember the recent articles on bart vinonii had several authors, so there is more than one person whose research you can check.
4. looking for publications that have articles on taxonomy, and see who is publishing on that, then checking their references for more names.
5. if you have a vet school nearby, and can access their computers, often they have special search engines that will pull up different journals than what is normally seen.
As a state and public funded school, they should allow public access. From what I have been reading here, the vet schools are way ahead of the medical researchers.
6. Then maybe some phone calls or emails to the researchers you have found, to answer or discuss?
My guess is that the information you are seeking will come from many sources, as research is very specific, and so Person A/School A may do one aspect, and Person B/School B may do another aspect.
Some of these researchers may be presenting at various academic gatherings.
Also, bart will appear in a specific phyla/species or whatever it is called. If you find that area, then you could also do a check on who is researching the species/phyla (the group that bartonella is a part of)..sorry I cant remember that word.
