I was bitten about 10 days ago now and had the red ring show up around what I thought was a mosquito bite. I've seen a few doctors now, the first one didn't know a thing about Lyme, but diagnosed me and got a second opinion from another doctor there and put me on 3 weeks of amoxicillin. Then I saw my dermatologist and he just seems to think that it is a bug or spider bite of some kind. It does look like the erythema migrans though even though it is fading. I still talked him into having a blood test. He wrote up the test too vaguely so didn't have one yet. What blood should I get? I was infected in Northern California. Now, I read the "Advanced Topics in Lyme Disease" and am really scared since it talked about how it can spread through breast milk. I am breast feeding and am so concerned that I have passed it on. What should I do? PLEASE HELP! THANKS!

I would stop breastfeeding if I were you.
I was in the same situation and breast fed my 2 year old for about a month before I stopped. My obstetrician said most definately that it cannot be spread through breastmilk. The only reason why I stopped is because I was afraid the antibiotic would affect her teeth. Now I know so much better, and there have been studies that show live bacteria can be cultured out of breastmilk (at least in mice). It is 5 years since, and I just had her tested for Lyme. Her current pediatrician refused (politely) to do the test based on the fact that there has been no proven transmission via breastmilk in humans (he's the one that told me about the mice). So, my own LLMD ordered the test. It came back negative, but what does that mean when even the experts believe the test only has coin-toss sensitivity!?? There are little (and occasionally not so little) things here and there that make me think she has Lyme - headaches, tummy aches, insomnia, early awakening, bumpy rash, horse voice, and dark circles just to name some of the persistent symptoms.
Anyway, I wouldn't risk it, and lots of kids have flourished with formula!
