My kids will be seeing Dr. J sometime in the next few months. Waiting on call for availability. We are pretty Lyme savvy as have been in treatment with Dr. H in CA for two years. Happy with Dr. H, but not for my kids. I want them to see the pediatric guru while we still can.
For those who have seen him, what can I expect: logistics (where to stay, we are coming from CA), navigating office procedures-is his staff helpful/friendly?, what is he like? I hear only good things, but I want to know what to expect.
What else am I forgetting?

Hes great and catered to my son. He was 9 when he started. Did orals for3 years and is dormant since 12. He's 17 now thank God and is fine.

My son has been Dr. J's patient for six years and I can tell you he's a wonderful, caring, very knowledgeable Lyme specialist.
His staff is helpful and friendly - they have gone out of their way to help us on many occasions!
There is a Ronald McDonald House several blocks away, but Dr. J's office needs to coordinate your stay there. Call his office and ask about this.
Your initial meeting with him lasts two hours, if I remember correctly. He takes time to listen and ask questions while going over your child's/children's medical history/histories. He will also do a physical exam.

Our daugher has been a patient for just over 2 years (now 12).
The first visit can be a little confusing as he didn't make a committment one way or another on the diagnosis BUT he started babesia med's and while the WB came back with Lyme bands didn't add a cyst buster for 5 months.
You will have to take into consideration he is under close watch by the State Medical Board (he is under a 4 year probabtion where his cases are audited with monthly reports to the board) and he got into trouble by prescribing meds and eventually not seeing the 2 patients as the parents canceled appts.
The first exam was great from the stand point of symptoms he saw that we never noticed until he was doing the exam. Simple things but due to the chronic fatigue we never noticed (balance, air hunger, bone pain as three quick ones from memory).
It was at the 2nd appointment he commented Babesia is at least 8 months (this was not specific to our daugher, just a comment he made) treatment. This was when he then added Tindamax to the drug combo.
It was at this appointment that he said the WB indicates exposure and he still wouldn't say she had lyme and babesia (as babs test was negative, WB just indicates exposure).
I look at his approach as slow and steady. One has to be careful as what works for one child may not for another (drug issues, etc.).
Office communication is not the best but we've run into this with other MD's as well. He has lost 2 good office staff over the past year which has hindered communication even more.

He's great! Our business partners daughter just got done with treatments after 5 years...he saved her life. She was gravely ill and misdiagnosed by many doctors.
It wasn't until she went to Dr. J that she started on the road to recovery.
