My 18 yr. old was hospitalized last week because Dr.'s thought he had meningitis. However, once that was ruled out through a spinal tap, they said he has Lymes. He's on doxy for 3 wks along with vicodin for the pain. I'd love to get him to another Dr. who specializes in Lymes. I'm worried not only about the dosage but the length of time he's to take these pills. Years ago we adopted a dog that had lymes and he was given doxy for 6 wks. and double the dose that they gave my son. Thanks in advance for any advice or Dr.'s names.

Welcome to Lymenet! PM sent for PA & MD.

Your dear son needs to be evaluated and treated by a Lyme-literate doctor (LLMD). Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease or its complex treatment!

LLMDs are far and few between, so you need to go where they are!

Also, most LLMDs do not take insurance due to the politics surrounding this disease. Read poster TF's explanation about this:

"Why Lyme Doctors Don't Take Insurance"
http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/2/15615?#000005s

He needs to get tested through IGeneX Labs in Palo Alto, CA.

When you call for an appointment, ask if they have any cancellations or a waiting list. Patients have been able to get in sooner by doing this.

Check the online state Lyme groups at:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pennsylvanialyme

Maybe they can help you.

Some more resources for you:

The top LLMD, Dr. H, has written a new book entitled, "Why Can't I Get Better?". It is an excellent source of information.

Read "Cure Unknown" by Pamela Weintraub. Get it at your local library or buy it used on Amazon.

View "Under Our Skin" for free on www.hulu.com

Btw - please break up your posts into 2-3 sentence paragraphs as there are people on Lymenet who cannot read large blocks of text due to neurological problems from Lyme, not Lymes. Thanks.
