I'm not positive if my son has Lyme but he shows a lot of symptoms. He is 9 years old and has been sick most of his life. He has a lot of symptoms for Lyme but he had the Elisa test done but it only showed 1 band. The last doctor I took him to wants him to see a Pyschologist. I'm not sure what to write. Is there anyone out there that doesn't mind talking? I need to find a Lyme doctor near Western New York or Pa. If I take him to a Lyme doctor and it is not Lyme will they test for other things?

Welcome to Lymenet! PM sent for NY & OH.

Lyme Disease is a clinical diagnosis made by a Lyme-literate doctor (LLMD) based on medical history, symptoms, test results, etc. The "It's all in your head" nonsense is a typical "diagnosis" given by non Lyme-literate doctors who have no clue what is wrong! Many here have experienced that.

The ELISA test is unreliable. My son only had one band positive for that and he has had Lyme for sixteen years now (it took SIX YEARS just to find out what was wrong with him!).

Your dear son should be tested through IGeneX Labs in Palo Alto, CA. They specialize in tick-borne diseases.

He needs to be evaluated and treated by a LLMD. Non LLMDs have no clue about this horrible disease or its complex treatment! If it isn't Lyme, I would think the doctor would also make recommendations and test for other things.

A LLMD is one who has treated Lyme disease and the co-infections which come with it for many years and has gotten patients well. A good one will follow Dr. B's Guidelines, the "gold standard" for Lyme treatment.

Here is a link for them:

Unfortunately, LLMDs are far and few between. He needs to go where they are.

Also, most LLMDs do not take insurance due to the politics surrounding this disease. Read poster TF's explanation about this:

"Why Lyme Doctors Don't Take Insurance"

When calling for an appointment, ask if they have any cancellations or a waiting list. Patients have been able to get in sooner by doing this.

Check the online state Lyme groups at:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/NewYorkLyme/info

Maybe they can help.

Some more resources for you (including Support Groups info):

Here are a couple of links about Lyme and children with very good information:

There is a lot to learn and Lymenet is an excellent source of information - read it every day. People here will help and advise you as much as possible. I found the help which we desperately needed on Lymenet for our son.

Read the book written by the top LLMD, Dr. Richard Horowitz titled, "Why Can't I Get Better?". It is an excellent source of information.

Also "Cure Unknown" by Pamela Weintraub. Check your local library or buy it used on Amazon.

Btw - I know you are new to Lymenet, but please break up your posts into 2-3 sentence paragraphs, as there are people on Lymenet who cannot read large blocks of text due to neurological problems from Lyme.

To do this click the pencil/paper icon, make your changes, then click "Edit Post". Thanks.
