I swear...what next. thank the Lord I am home.

my oldest sister had excruciating back pain. went to er and they sent her home with tramadol....idiots...

she makes appt with back specialist at kettering hosital. he runs cat, mri and xrays.

he comes in and says "my god, how are you even here? your damn back is broken."

she has what's called a thoracic compressed wedge fracture. two breaks. every time I call her, she's at home, she's crying.

doc says more tests to see if she needs conservative or surgical treatment. she said she has 10 plus pain in her back and legs.
anybody heard of this??

what else is going to happen....geezzz

The most common cause is osteoporosis.

Here is a good one-page explanation of a compression wedge fracture:

http://umm.edu/programs/spine/health/guides/thoracic-compression-fractures

A friend of mine just had this happen to him. They made him a plastic "body cast" that he had to put on each morning. They call it a brace. It is form fitted to your back. Covers back and front. Has Velcro straps .

This guy is 84. He healed well. In 6 weeks he didn't have to wear the brace anymore. He spun around and fell. That is how he broke one vertebrae. The pain was bad at first.

Getting him out of bed in the morning was extremely, extremely painful at first.

Eventually, he was able to get himself out of bed without the assistance of his wife. That was after maybe 4 days of wearing the brace. Then, eventually, he was to take it off for 2 hours at a time, then longer and longer.

That is how they will treat this as long as she doesn't have any complications that will necessitate surgery.

The pain IS bad. Hopefully they will make her the brace shortly. She likely will not like the brace, but it acts as a cast and takes the pressure off the broken bones. She will live on pain pills for a number of weeks. But, if she just needs the cast, she will get better and better.

She will be able to go places, walk around, etc. Sitting will be her favorite thing at first. But, she will get more active each week.

My friend is now out of the cast and good as new. He lost weight due to the entire ordeal. He barely ate in the beginning. Pain was so bad.
