Dr. Hinson slowly returning to health By Kelly Evenson | [email protected]
Although still not running at full steam, Independence Superintendent Jim Hinson has returned to work.
"I am getting better each day," he said of his recent illness. "But, I am still not up to par. It is a slow process."
Hinson was hospitalized earlier this month and is still being treated for Lyme disease. He said it has been difficult battling the illness while trying to get school under way for the 2007-08 school year.
"I have been in the office every day this week, but this (Friday) has definitely been my longest day," he said. "But I have had to limit my activities. It has been difficult because I am not a patient man."
Hinson said what has helped most during his recovery has been the support from the school district personnel as well as the community. He said he has received "scores of cards and e-mails" from people hoping that he recovers quickly.
"The staff has been absolutely wonderful," he said. "They have picked up the gaps that have been created (by my absence). I can't say enough about how wonderful everyone has been."
Hinson has been told it will take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to recover completely. He's been doing a lot of work by telephone and by e-mail.
"But it was not abnormal for me to work 14-hour days, so I have had to learn how to slow down.
"The people in the community have been great during this whole time."

Wow Sarah, seems like Dr. Hinson really has no concept of chronic Lyme.
While I am happy to see the disease openly discussed in the news, I am concerned about the misconceptions that can be found too often in these pieces. I'm sure you are concerned too.
You were probably concerned years before I had a clue that I had chronic Lyme! So, thanks Sarah. For your continued vigilence and concern.
I am hopeful the interview of Brooke Landau on Good Morning America next Tuesday will give more of the real story.

Think it would do any good to write a letter to the editor about it? Maybe there are already some letters here on the forum that could be tailored?
