several, er many, years ago i broke a thermometer in the bathroom. the old kind with the mercury in it. i wiped it up and threw the glass away.

well last week, i broke another one. shaking it and it got away from me. this one said it was not mercury but something else.

so if you break a thermometer are you exposed? i remember calling the doctor's office and they said that it was such a small amount, there was no problem.

The ship has sailed on the one years ago. I did that, too, about 20 years ago and knew nothing. My doctor said the same thing about it not being a big deal.

However, if you search Google, you will see it can be a serious matter there are specific ways to clean it up. So, did we get a dose of exposure by even breathing it or running the vacuum over it time and again? Could be. But we get mercury from other ways, too.

Fortunately, the broken thermometer this time, is not mercury. Find out what it is, though, and just search to be sure that was cleaned up correctly.

All lyme patients need to assess heavy metal detox since it goes hand in hand with lyme, anyway. So, if that has not yet been explored, this may be a reminder to do that. More here:

It was probably a form of alcohol. I believe that is what they use in newer non-mercury thermometers.

Heck, we used to PLAY with that stuff when I was a kid!!! I HOPE I didn't do it a lot .. but I do remember doing it!!! [shake] [bonk]

Scary, the things we did back then. Like pick off ticks with our fingers and kill them between our thumbnails!!!! [Eek!]

Up until all this happened I ALWAYS pulled ticks off bare handed (could even be how my son got infected) that is what angers me, why is there not better education and public awareness about all this!!! I know all my friends, relatives and coworkers are sick of hearing about all of this but if I could save one person from going through what we are it will be worth it.

You're right, Lymex.. we save as many as we can!!

I have an excuse for pulling them off with my fingers. I got infected 15 yrs before they found out what lyme WAS!

Lymextu- the simple reason there isnt more education about proper removal of ticks is...who cares if you remove a tick incorrectly causeing an infection as a result. it will only take a couple of weeks of doxy to be completely fine, dont you know that?

JunkYard - Sometimes I wish I could go back to that naive time from last fall life was sooo much simpler then. Have to say how nice it is to talk with all of you that are going through this, as Pamela Weintraub says "healthy people really don't want to talk about Lyme". that is until........ They can't say I didn't try to tell them!!
