...to a hatchling Leopard Gecko

My son got the two Geckos last summer while he was still having seizures and episodes..barely functioning.

Then realized Phil and Jackie were really Phyllis and Jake..and so he learned how to incubate, and Phyllis has popped out six thriving eggs this spring.

In the homemade incubator tonight, sat the cutest little baby. Needless to say, my son's ecstatic.

He often says one good thing that came out of Lyme is his road to Herptology..
he's an avid fan of all the Herp shows on Discovery and Animal Planet, and this got him reading again a few months ago.

Winnie joins his two parents, along with Vince the Corn snake, Fran the Greek Tourtoise, Fred the Crested Flame Gecko, and Stan..the Bearded Dragon..all collected over the past ten months.

Ry Guy has learned all about each species, takes impecable care of them all....and is uplifted and stimulated while out of school, through his fightening ordeal as a very ill 13yr old.

(I owe these guys each a heap in psycho-therapy bills..)

Well Mo, you had me going there for a minute. You got me thinking it was April 1! I'm not hard to confuse!!!!

What a wonderful 'teaching moment' for Ryan. Sometimes wonderful things come out of unfortunate situations. He never would have gotten the education in the classroom that you have provided for him these last months. And, Mother to Mother, I must say you get the "Cool Mom of the Year" Award for allowing 'herps' into your house - snakes, gekos, dragons bleck!!!! What we do for our children......

Does Ry know about www.anapsid.org?

This is an extensive website by another Lymie with an interest in herps. She's also an infrequent Lymenet participant.

Congrats on the successful hatch!

I dig all the "herps" and had a few snakes as a child myself. My favorite was a corn snake I named "tut".

Your right he could have never gotten that kind of an learning experience in a formal school. See the bennifits of homeschooling??

Think it is great your kid has not only a love to have the animals as pets but wants to learn about them too, sign of good parents

I know I should be congratulating both Ryan and you, but honestly, all I can think of at the moment is: "I wonder what zoonotic diseases these critters carry?"

Gee, I hate to be such a spoil-sport. Can't help it, though.

We just found out that one of our daughter's two cats tested highly positive for Bartonella. The good news is that there is treatment for the cat.

We have been delaying treatment for our daughter on Bartonella, after she tested positive for it a while back, because it didn't make any sense to treat her until/unless both of her cats were tested first, to avoid her being re-exposed to it herself.

Congratulation! -- but I don't envy you.

These guys actually have captured my affection..even the snake has grown on me, though, I admit, a distant second to the others..

The lizards and tortoise have amazing eyes..old souls..

Tx,
I appreciate the words of caution, Lord knows they've saved many a perverbial butt around here, ours included many times over..

.. so far as we've researched, you can't catch much of anything from reptiles..though they can catch things from us..so you have to wash hands when handling them for their protection.

Amphibians (wet skin..frogs, salamanders), however, can transmit Salmonella if they take a tinkle on you, so you have to be careful to wash well after handling them.

Then we have to house allot of crickets..which you have to be careful in maintaining them properly so as not to get these certain larvae..but cleanliness keeps that under control...Ry's remaining OCD tendencies make him particularly good at that stuff..(little Lyme humor )
You'd be hard-pressed to find a spec of mold or to catch a whiff of anything foul in his reptillian zoo, his is the cleanest room in the house..

Ryan's Leopard Gecko, Jake..actually contracted pneumonia a while back (I guess it's not uncommon)..I joked with the reptile vet about whether we should insert a miniature PICC line.. but after five days abx by injection..he pulled through just fine.

This has really been amazing for Ryan, coming into himself on this journey..he's also taken to photographing them, some of our LL's have copies of his best work.

He has two schools picked out for college to study herptology already..somehow..I have the feeling it's going to stick..

Thanks for the website, Riversinger!!

I'll show Ryan the thread later..

Thanks everybody else, too!!..It's nice to share with you guys here who know what we've been working through. My family and friends from our former existance don't quite "get it".

Mo

Ryan just pointed out to me I'm actually a Great Grandmother..I just get older by the minute
