I just received my email newsletter from "What Doctors Don't Tell You" and this is one of their articles:

"STATISTIC OF THE WEEK

Nearly one in four doctors in the UK is mentally ill. A 12-year study has found that 22 per cent of doctors who participated were suffering from a basic mental disorder by the age of 30. Interestingly, researchers from University College London, who carried out the study, found that the doctors' neurotic tendencies were linked to their personalities rather than from work pressures. So people who are first mad then become doctors. . ."

There used to be a belief that dentists were the most mad. The most likely to commit suicide and the most likely to commit homicide.

But it was believed to be from working with mercury.

***In Alice In Wonderland that is why the "mad" hatter. Hatters (those who made hats) were thought to be mad. They worked with liquid mercury on a day to day basis.

WOW....Not surprised, working with them Many a time I questioned, what the heck they were thinking of....

Some come in with these most outlandish outfits. We always had a good laugh. Including mismatched may 1 red,1 blue sock. Some of the jackets,stupid jokes.

Ahhhh, list could go on...

aaagggghhmmmm......call me stupid, but I did not know that hats required mercury. Learn somthing new everytime I log on.

I dont think hats require mercury any longer. It was probably cheap and easy to use (in the 1800's).

This brought back memories of working in ICU at my local hospital. A local dentist was admitted with diagnosis of hallucinations, paranoia, etc. Rumor had it (small town, you know) that this dentist was illegally prescribing and using controlled narcotics for himself.

His tox screen came back negative so it was decided to do a CT scan, MRI etc. I was his primary nurse so I accompanied him to do these tests because of his irrational behavior. The man HAD to have someone at his side holding his hand.

I only worked there on as needed basis so I never found out what the tests revealed or what had become of him. A few weeks later one of the regular nurses in the unit called to tell me had committed suicide. A few days prior to this he had called the unit to get the name and address of the nurse who had been there with him that day. Because of confidentiality they could not tell him. In the note he left prior to committing suicide he wanted to thank that unknown person and said he had only wanted to send flowers out of gratitude to thank her for not beleiving he was crazy like all the others did.

Talk about giving me the jeebies at the time!! So sad now though, to realize this man was a dentist exposed to high levels of mercury. Was that the cause of his delusions?? Will never know but can only make you wonder if it was a contributing factor......

I always heard the reason for the high rate of suicide among dentists is because they are one of the most hated professionals out there. No one ever WANTS to go to the dentist.

I'm probably wrong . . . I just know that that was the reasoning I always heard behind the statistic.

I LOVE going to the dentist. I think it was because I went to a pediatric dentist.

You got to select the flavor of toothpaste. Bubble gum or blueberry or strawberry.

They always used NOxide to calm you down. "Mr. Big Nose" as it was called.

There was one huge room with about 8 differant chairs. All the kids were in the same room.

Posters on the ceilings so you have something to look at. Stuffed animals.

And then you got to pick a toy out of the treasure chest.

Actually, I loved the pediatric dentist too!

I always picked the bubblegum flavor!

And he always took one of those gloves and blew it up to make a balloon for me. (He even drew the face on it.)

I wonder if their suicide rate is as high or lower adult dentists?
