My kids seem to think I need a "Mother Board" I live where the internet speed is only about 46-48 kbps(my connection here).
I know nothing of computers. Does anybody out there in cyber world have a "Mother Board"???????Experiences????

Hi Don,Everyone who has a computer has a mother board.

A mother board is the big circut board inside a computer. It is the foundation of the computer.Every other part of a computer plugs into the mother board.

The first thing you do to build a computer is install a mother board inside a computer case. Then you start pluging in everything else. MADDOG

One reason I'm not on here more and don't read many of the posts thus missing some I should respond to is because my connect speed is no better than 28.8.

I'd get a cable modem but the local cable monopoly doesn't offer it and DSL isn't out here yet so I know what it feels like to go mow the yard while waiting for a site to load.

I wonder if you wouldn't be better off just replacing the whole computer.

Of course I'm partial to Macs.

Whats motherboard its where your cpu resides and if its (cpu) is not one of the newer ones your problem with speed is probaly it.

I have a older Gateway which at the time it was made was good but in todays speeds its crap. It has a 200ghz cpu central processor unit. put put put.

I also have a computer that has a 1.7ghz with a totally upgradeable motherboard in other words I can stick a bigger faster cpu chip in it and up grade ram alot.

If your PC is older some moterboards are able to be upgraded with more ram and a faster chip(CPU) some are not.

I just got DSL and it saves me ALOT of time! I can now post a few things and read a few things here and participate more because it takes me far less time than before.

My DSL is at 768kbps. I love it.

If you can't get DSL, can you get high speed with your cable company? [don and charlie]

Wow that is fast. We will call you quick as a bunny from now on!!! Alas the only cable in this area (my house) are the huge ones I keep for when I get stuck in the mud and need a tow!!! (With a 20,000# piece of iron, plus 5-10,000# in tow)

You are absolutely right, and you could have just called me a dummy cuz I B one!!! I do remember now that a mother board is the beginning of all puters. Thats what my daughters boyfriend called it anyway. He works at a cable internet place and have to deal with bozo's like me all the time so thats what he called it. Probably meant a bigger mother board. I did upgrade my ram a couple years ago and it made "alot" of difference. I think I had 64 megs and then I bought another 124 megs(whatever they are) He says its quite a deal to change and will take most of a day to reinstall everything after he does this. But promised it would make it 10 times faster. He cant hardly stand such a small loading factor. Course he upgraded me to Windows XP also. Said the new motherboard would be $100-150. so if it works as said, well worth the chips. If he isnt dating my daughter before he comes to do it, all bets are off. Such is the life of the young and the beautiful. Us old haggard buzzards just used for coyote bait!! LOL!! --jd--

p.s. Charlie, some places around here out in the stix are getting hooked up via wireless links. My boss shares an antenna with a few neighbors and has pretty good service at price similar to DSL. Getting more common, might want to look into it.

TuTu...the cable co doesn't offer int. access and they get a monopoly in a given area. I've been refusing to subscribe and asking others to threaten to cancel if they don't start offering RR or whatever but so far nothing.

Dan..I'm going to check some other options out. One satellite outfit a few had subscribed to made you go thru some sort of 'portal' that slowed everything way down to the point it wasn't worth the bother of setting it up.

Really it's just a matter of SBC updating some overloaded equipment and we'll be able to get DSL but they're pretty slow and the building boom is taxing everything.

Charlie - I feel your pain!! If SBC tells me one more time I'll have DSL in 6 months I'm gonna SCREAM!!! We don't have cable available and satellite is way too expensive and as you said, not probably worth it!!

We had been using an antique computer w/ fastest connection on dial up at about 21.6. So for Christmas we splurged on a new "BIG DADDY DELL" w/ Pentium 4 etc!!

At first we were connecting at 28.0 but, now for some reason, 24.0 is the fastest we get!! I'm basically computer stupid and thought w/ the new one we would connect faster but, we are the last folks on the SBC line from the "Box" so, we get SLOW service I guess!! I guess a little faster is better than nothing and if DSL ever does get h ere, this one is ready to connect at least!!!

Living for DSL!!! Sherry

Ponytail, [& maybe don] your computer may be slower because you upgraded to WindowsXP. I was told the other day that if I bought a new computer with twice the megs [???] that it wouldn't help that much because XP takes twice as much memory! [hope I'm explaining this right....I basically have no clue!]

SOOO, when we upgrade we'll want to triple our capacity to accomodate the XP.

Charlie, the wireless link I mentioned is not satellite - it's set up by a local ISP. There was mention of "line-of-sight" so I imagine it's a microwave of some sort.

Lymetoo and others: when you get a new computer, one thing to watch out for is always the maximum memory capacity. Even if you don't currently want 2 Gigabytes, in 4 years you may need it. You don't need to install that much now - but if your motherboard won't take it, to upgrade later you'll need both the memory and a new motherboard.

But of course the cheapo computers that are on sale won't have that capacity. So, once again it's a balancing act.

(I went for 1 Gbyte installed, 4 Gbytes capacity, and 2nd CPU capable)

Sorry you are having trouble with your computer again.

I too wonder if it is because of the new program.

I purchased a Gateway in 2000 before I got sick. Having a computer and being connected to others has made all the difference in the world. I am sure it means a lot to you too.

But, you can always call you know.

I have been using the phone line all this time with my computer and AOL.

I did try about a dozen other servers but they were not reliable and at times very slow so I went back to AOL. I don't use the DSL just the dial up.

Not sure how to solve your problem.

When I saw your subject line I was tempted to make a few mother board jokes myself, but I see that it has all ready been covered.
