Over 90% of ingredients used in personal care products have not been evaluated for safety by the CIR or the FDA. Carcinogenic and neurotoxic ingredients are everywhere. The National Library of Medicine offers several databases of toxic substances (found in drugs, cosmetics, houselhold products etc.).
There's a helpful book called "The Safe Shopper's Bible" that discusses the many carcinogenic and/or neurotoxic ingredients found in common household products, cosmetics, etc. The authors rate commonly available products based on how much of the offending ingredients are in them. If a person is looking for options to the products they use (or if they just want to see how their favorite products rate), this is a good place to start.
I found a copy of this book at my local library and learned a lot from it.
