Hi!
My Dad went in to have an angiogram last friday and had a stoke. It is the most awful thing you can imagine. He can't talk, eat and sleeps all the time.He is so sick.
We don't know what he is thinking ,feeling ,understands etc.It is absolute torture .

I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

He didn't deserve this.He never smoked, exercised all the time.

He had prostrate cancer last year and was just getting over it when he started going downhill again. They said he was depressed and then had asthma.Eventually they found out he had an enlarged heart and fluid on the lungs. They then found one of his valves wasn't working properly, the one that leads out of the heart and into the aorta.

They found that the aorta is distended as a result and he has two growths of some kind in the heart, one attatched to the valve. They don't know if they are benign, malignant or clots.

It really is a nightmare. They were going to send him straight over for heart surgery and then towards the end of the test he wasn't talking any more.

It is the worst day of my life so far and feel so sorry for my Mum.

It is excrusiating sitting there every day just looking at him and all he can do is grunt. He seems really confused sometimes and other times he seems to understand what we are saying.

Life can be so awful.

I just wish that if he isn't going to make any significant recovery his heart would go and it would be all over and he would be at peace and we didn't have to see him looking like this and suffering.
He keeps pulling out the feeding tube.

I always thought stroke would be awful but until you see someone you love in this state you can't know anything.

Sorry for making you all sad but I need your prayers that either he improves or he is sent to a better place.

Thanks and take care,Sue.

Sue,

You are truly in my thoughts and prayers. I am such a "Daddy's Girl," I am so sorry your Dad is suffering like this.

My step Dad died of lung cancer in '99--and it was so horrible to see someone I loved so much suffer.

Please take comfort that many people are praying for you and that your Dad loves you and is o grateful for you being with him now.

Sincerely,
Linda

Sue, I'm so sorry.

There is nothing terrible about wishing for an easy passage out of this life if the body and mind are so terribly damaged and beyond recovery. It's what we all hope for -- a good life, and a kind death.

I'll keep you in my thoughts, and hope for the best for you and your dad.

Very true. My mom had her fourth major stroke in March. She has been close to death with each one of her strokes.

This last one was the most disabling. She is on a more permanent feeding tube, but is now able to talk a little bit. It's very hard to understand her.

Other than that, she's flat on her back in a nursing home...not a good place to be.

I understand your pain very well. I do hope your dad doesn't have to suffer anymore. We'll pray for his recovery and for his peace.

He may begin to improve in another week or two. Sleeping is very normal because he's been through a major trauma to his body.

Hang in there. It's rough. All my family [except husband] are in Texas, so I went through all that with no support. Very painful.

Prayers are on their way!

Sue,

My heart goes out to you & your Mom on this as well as your beloved Dad.

I haven't been thru a stroke, but congestive heart failure with Dad getting 2 aorta valve replacements with the last one at age 80.

I know when Mom and my sister, 41, were dying of their cancer having gone to their livers, I had many good visits with them.

The important thing was giving them permission to die and go to Heaven where all their health would be restored! I saw a huge relief in each of them when I told them this.

Can you have your Dad blink 1 eye or 2 blinks for a yes or no? Best wishes and keep praying to God or whoever you believe in.
