ANA Position Could Endanger Students with Diabetes

Diabetes health care professionals, parents, and other Diabetes Advocates will be alarmed by the American Nurses Association's (ANA) draft position statement entitled School Nurses: Providing Safe Health Supervision and Care for Children in the School Setting.

While calling for full staffing of recommended school nurse/student ratios, something ADA fully supports, the proposal endangers students with diabetes because it provides no realistic role for the care of students with diabetes from any school personnel other than a school nurse, nor does it include the student's parents or diabetes health care team in the planning process.

The bottom line: if a school nurse is not present, a child with diabetes will not receive help, even in a LOW blood sugar emergency.

What You Can Do
ANA is accepting comments on the proposal through May 15th.

We are asking diabetes health care professionals, parents of children, and all other Diabetes Advocates to oppose this statement because it endangers students with diabetes at school and school-related activities.

When you send your comments, please identify yourself as a parent, health care professional, ANA member, or simply as a Diabetes Advocate.

Write about your own experiences caring for your child or other children with diabetes, especially in the school setting, if appropriate.

Take Action
To use our prepared letter click here. Again, we urge you to identify your connection to diabetes and add your own comments when writing!

If you would prefer to send a message that is totally your own, please consider using our talking points.

Send your message, by May 15, to [email protected].

If you choose to send your own letter, we ask that you also send a COPY of your comments to the us at [email protected].

After you submit your comments, please tell us if you are a parent, a health care professional, an ANA member, or simply a concerned Diabetes Advocate.

Finally, for Parents: Please share this information with your child's diabetes health care professionals and ask them to respond with comments urging ANA to adopt a position that will provide students with diabetes with a safe and healthy school environment
