another outdoor critter, as if lymes in my little guy wasn't bad enough.
Please tell me what you think it could be, and if I should do more than I am.
I found what looked like a toe nail sticking out of my sons poop 4 weeks ago. I looked at it, and it startled to wriggle out and walk on top of his poop. I put it and the poop in a bag for sampling. i knew it was in there because I saw it in the bag.
I took it to the peds where they mushed everything and sent it to the hospital lab. Well, it got lost. No worm or ovum was found in his sample.
I was so mad I didn't isolate it. The doctor would not give him vermex because she didn't understand what kind of worm this could be. It was the color of a finger nail, and about a quarter inch long.
I asked for another poop sample to repeat test at the hospital and wanted a tapeworm kit. All tests came back negative. I have sent out for another stool kit from an out of area lab.It is assesed by a doctor, all contents are reported, and results have to be sent to a doctor. Problem is, I still haven't received it yet and it's been two weeks.
He has no itching of his butt at night, nor do I see any worms with the flashlight from his rectum while he sleeps.
She will not treat him, but wants me to monitor symptoms. I'm so mad....I saw the worm.
Then tonight i read of round worm infection, blindness in the eye, lung damage......
I will demand a blood test Monday to assess round worm infection, and call the lab about my kit, but now I'm wiggin.
Worst of all she prescribes Vermex to her patients without seing them if they complain of intense rectal itching. I saw a worm and I'm fighting for care....boy do I feel like a Lyme patient.
Anyone have this experience? Thoughts on which worm it could be? He has a little cough, but it was accompanied with a runny nose. It appears to be getting better. He's not eating as well as he usually does though.
I also noticed diahrea and intestinal pain after preschool two day before the worm finding. He is so oral, and plays in the mulch and sand at school.

Sounds like pinworms. They are more common in small children than people think.
Don't panic. You will probably see more. Get a flashlight and look at his bottom at night. They come out in the dark. Sometimes they can find the eggs around the anus with just a piece of scotch tape and a microscope. Quick and easy. Watch for itching and check his poo every day.
He probably got it from the sand. Cats poo in the sandboxes all the time. Great place for these critters to grow because the sand is moist.
child care needs to have the sandbox covered. the sand also needs to be disinfected with bleach and water mixture.

I ordered pinworm medicine from a pet supply house, to treat pinworms in my cats.
This might be easier than fighting with the doctor.

The thing i don't get is that he had the classic pin worm test of tape around the anus at night and it came back negative. Is it possible to have a false negative and the test should be reported?
Also he lacks that terrible nightly itch. I have checked with a flashlight and case his poops. I have seen for a few of them, things that look like small pieces of cashews. Although he will not have eaten them. Also, they are not in everyone.
I'd rather it be pin worm. The other worms seem so damaging.

I don't trust any lab test to be 100% accurate.
My daughter had trichenosis! not to scare you. this doesn't come out in bm. But...I would not delay figuring out how to treat this parasite. some are very serious and lyme compromised system is more prone to these-IMO.
Can your lyme dr. help you?
If not, when I took my son to a dr who was more into wholstic and natural path; he gave a lot more attention and importance to this sort thing as part of treating overall health. May be a route for you to pursue.

Went to the peds yesterday with more poop in hand. There was no worm but larva-looking things. A group of three tiny oval, opaque egg-looking objects in the stool. It helped because she was willing to treat with Vermox one day.
I reminded her that therapy was for pinworm, whereas any other worm except tape worm needed that medicine for three days.
We went back and forth disputing the entity. She said pinworm, i said round worm...I guess neither one of us believed the other nor ourselves well enough to know what the alien was.
It boiled down to her asking what would make me comfortable. I told her three days, she said okay, but we were basicacally treating me. I said okay, did not pursue blood testing, offered up the poop in the bowl (of which she shook her head exhaustingly no), promised I'd take my poop kits which just came in the mail yesterday (yeah!!!) before any meds, breathed deep, and walked out.
Can't say whether it went well or not. I got a solid therapy, sill not sure what I'm dealing with, and feel like a hypochondriac-munchhousins(or however ya spell it) mom. She did give me a pitiful arm reach embrace when I said I would use the kit before treating.
Oh well, another day of motherhood fighting for your children down....hopefully a million more to go minus the fighting.
