heard on the wether today that this COLD snap is all over the nation.
On a different forum a guy in the Mohave desert in California said it was only 14* there this morning with 0 wind chill(more properly they call that 'feels like' temp).
How cold is it where you are?? And if its not cold there yet, hold on its coming!!!
It was right around zero temp here last couple days,,,feels like temp was 20-30 below. Brutal winds for awhile!!
Supposed to be in the single digit below zero nights and way up to a toasty singles (above)in daytime. Fer awhile anyway!!

hi don--
it was 28 degrees here last night but with the wind it felt like single digits.
I live in the central valley of CA right now where MOST of the nation's fruit is grown. the citrus is taking a BIG hit right now. expect the prices to sky rocket.
But it is SUNNY which helps me to feel warmer and warms the house thru solar means. But at night it means zilch--just darn cold.

was 80 yesterday, 75 today, by Mon it's supposed to be 30 and sleeting....just got the propane tank topped up. Hopefully this'll be the last freeze of winter, tired of covering plants and need to go pick the last of the tangerines or they'll turn to mush. Posted by just don (Member # 1129) on :
Charlie,,,we were typing at the same time.
Wow you have tangerine trees I am jealous!!!
Do you have fresh orange trees too?? My aunt and unce in Florida had those once at Christmas time,,,they would NEVER let us pick one off the ground, perfectly good to eat,,,but NO GOOD according to them,,,soo much better than store bought. Rarely get anything 'good' from store bought,,,picked WAY to green!!!

Don.
Fun post. I haven't figured out how things feel outside compared to what the temp is yet.
For example: I left Northern CA one day with single digit temps and traveled to central CA.
I actually felt much colder in central ca.
So, here goes....
Today I took Rosie out for our early morning outing. I had on my long johns, jeans, snow boots, long johns on top, sweater, feece, jacket, bomber hat, ski gloves and I am still trying to thaw out after having a hot cup of chocolate and being indoors with the heater on.
The good news is my hands were just cold. They did not feel like pins and needles as they have in the past when I have gone out for a quick toilet run without my gloves.
We have snow on the ground...but not much. And I had scattered snow flakes as we were out and about.
Posted by Aniek (Member # 5374) on :
Just Don,
We've got 50/60's all weekend. Only cold day in the foreseeable future is Wednesday lows in the 20's, but then pops back up to the 40's.
This is actually driving me crazy. I want some snow in my winter!
Posted by AP (Member # 8430) on :
74 in Virginia Beach today. NOAA predicts it'll be 73 Sunday, 72 Monday, 51 Teusday, 40 Wednesday, and going back up for the weekend.

Wow! We used to buy tangerines in your area all the time when I was a kid. Are you between Beasley and Orchard?? There was a large orchard there. How many trees do you have?
Sorry don...had to ask that!!!
Don, it's 33 and raining here. Oh joy! We're very lucky it's not already freezing. Very lucky.
I think most of the Southeast is warm today. Lucky ducks!
Posted by charlie (Member # 25) on :
Between Beasley and Pleak. Cottonwood area. We just have one big tree but it requires a ladder to get to the top and get the remaining couple of dozen. Everybody here grows those things and Meyer lemons and grapefruit.
Charlie
Posted by just don (Member # 1129) on :
Charlie, Plant a couple orange trees for me. grapefruit always tasted like 'sour' for ME!!! I think everybody in the south ought to have a fresh supply of Vitamin C in case somebody comes for a visit and looks sorta pale(like me)
I remember those Floria oranges I spoke of before,,,juice running down both sides of mouth at once!!! Yummy!!!!fer da tummy!!
tutu, YOU can hijack any of my threads, any day,,,any time!! And come back and get the rest of them too. It's all is 'good' in the end,,,just keep chatting,,,no matter what!!!
This freezer burn must gonna be out of gas before it reaches the east coast. We would be glad to share!! I saw on news that Anchorage was 45 below a week ago and now its up to like 20* so there is HOPE!!!
Geesh, KAM's description of all the clothes she had on for going outside for a bit,,,,we dont wear that many here to go outside all day long!!! Till it drops WAAAAAY below zero,,,then I break out the coveralls,,,before that just lj's and jeans,,,gets me by till wind blows over 30MPH!!!
Yesterday my hiney was shiney tho and hurtin cause I sat on a old tin seat(no cover) for about 20 minutes
I got a hole in my insulated boots so just been wearing summer boots for winter time use. They get real stiff tho!!(uninsulated plastic they are!) I CAN break out my insulated holey boots but any water or crap and I am in big trouble, they leak worse than an upside down boat!! AND they are SOOO heavy!! So it has to be COLD and DRY for them to come out!!
I just cant believe getting down to 10 in Barstow California tho,,,and a lady from LA was talking about this strange white dust on there windsheild in the morning time, it was snow,,,and they didnt know what it was!!!
Keep warm from --just don--
Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :
Don, you're too funny!!
Hey Charlie....never heard of Pleak. Must be the size of Tavner!!
Do you know of a large orchard in that area? I just wonder if someone bought that land and got rid of the trees or was smart enough to keep them?
Don......stay warm!!!! Posted by bettyg (Member # 6147) on :

JD,
I'm glad you brought this subject up. I'm really miffed today about our weather here in Ventura County Calif.
I had a tee time with our regular foursome and we weren't able to play golf today because of the weather.
It actually got down to 48d and the wind was howling at 10mph.
We had to stay in the clubhouse and drink bloody mary's until we all decided to call it a day, just too darn cold to even get out on the golf course.
I'll sure be glad when this cold snap is over, it's messin' with my outdoor activities.

Dear Don,
It is cloudy and breezy with a low temp of 64 and a high today of 75.
Welcome to what we call winter in Louisiana. It is supposed to get markedly colder on Monday.
Of course cold for us in the deep south includes highs in the upper 40's.
Does play havoc with Lyme symptoms. Up and down just like the temps.
I'd love to see some snow. I am originally from Michigan.
We have a saying here that if the Saints make the playoffs then it will snow.
I wonder if they make it to the Superbowl does it mean we'll get a blizzard.
Such a rare event here.
Keep warm ya'll!!!! Go Saints!!!!!

It JUST started snowing wildly here about an hour ago!! It is reducing visiability to about a quarter mile!! Not the worst I ever saw,,,but anything is TOO much for me!! I think I am allergic to snow!!
I remember the time weather man said occasional flurries.. About 15" later it quit 'flurrying'. I HATE when that happens.
Snow on the ground makes air temps 10-15 degrees colder,,,alot like putting ice cubes in your drink of choice.
Weather man said we are thru the traditional two coldest weeks of winter now, makes me feel better...NOT!!!
Stay warm, and (dry). (old saying---keep your powder dry!!)me b --just don--

Today the sun is shining brightly it was about 10 BELOW zero last night warming up to a balmy 5 today. Wind chill is/was about 30 below, thats cold enough fer me!!
Supposed to warm way up till 20's this week!!(later)

24F here this morning [late] with flurries. Hope those flurries don't turn into 6-8 in of snow!!

lymedad, 48 degrees and couldn't play golf! our guys would be golfing in that type of weather.
geneal, 68; wow, we live in the wrong state for winter! envious of you.
seeing the news coverage of ALL ICE DAMAGE done to trees, etc. makes me think of feb. 1990 when i drove like a maniac to the hospital w/mom & dad. her colon to liver cancer got really bad and she had a temp of 104. so i raced us to local hospital.
that night/next day were severe ice storms, and from her 5th floor room, i watched for hours all the transformers blowing up like fireworks in the sky. i felt so powerless watching everyone losing their power and it was around zero and sub-zero windchills.
whoops, got to reminiscing again; lyme me! uffda Posted by just don (Member # 1129) on :
TuTu,
Glad you missed the ice storms,,,those are NOT fun!!
Trails,
so sad to hear we wount be snacking oranges this year, darn I hate when that happens.
I guess the weather man was wrong before,,,now they are talking zero, nahda, for a high, ice cube effect going on for sure!!!
I recall minus 80 wind chill when I was a kid and just a few years ago,,,they reformed those tables so we 'felt' warmer,,,,NOT!!!
I think its a disservice to people cause they dont realize how brutal and cutting the wind is till its too late.
In the old days you didnt hear about people out freezing to death, stranded on the road etc. NOW you do!!
Takes VERY little time to kill somebody when things are at there worst!!
IF your stranded, stay IN the car, dont WALK!!! And dont go playing with downed power lines either. cuz I remain--just don--

A two dog night meant it was very very cold.

In answer to the perennial query ``how cold WAS it?'' we offer this: cold enough to skate on the Merced River! The recent cold snap that brought record low temperatures to California caused the Merced's surface to freeze many inches thick in the chilly east end of Yosemite Valley. YA staff members Michelle Hansen and Laurel Rematore celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by practicing their figure- skating skills on the spectacular ephemeral ice rink-- stopping frequently to gaze at the river bottom visible below their feet. While Michelle grew up skating on ponds, this was a completely new experience for Bay Area native Laurel. Both agreed it was an extraordinary day, and a terrific way to ``hang out at the river.''
Above, Laurel pauses in her pursuit to perform the perfect crossover on the Merced River Ice Rink. By the time you read this, the ice will likely have melted as Yosemite Valley temperatures climb back in the seasonal range.
Editor's note: It appears Laurel's last comment was hopeful at best. Michelle skated the river again this morning, and local climbers are seeking out ice routes as temperatures stay frigid, especially in the shade.

I JUST saw the forcast for the weekend,,,tommorrows the 'last' good day for a loNG while it is supposed to get down to 15-20 below,,,PLUS a lot of wind chill,,,highs for the days to be lucky to crack 0!!!
Anybody have to guess "I dont like this crap!!!" And it seems to bless us with more snow every day,,,just to add misery to the company list.

Their reply was no because they didn't have a ice hut. My son said you do now! You can use mine. He explained that he had a partner to fish with who had a ice hut so he didn't need his.
He explained to me that the mans brother had some kind of illness and he thought anyone who was sick should still be able to ice fish.
