The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation is hosting a retirement dinner in honour of Dr Ernie Murakami, now retired.
At the Royal Canadian Legion, Hope BC Sat May 3, 2008, arrive 5:00, dinner at 6:00
The menu is Japanese food. Please email [email protected] for reservations. Pay at the door, $15 per person or more for those who can afford to do so. There will be a bar.
This is to be a happy, social event with no political overtones. Just come and wish Dr Ernie all the best in his retirement!
A scrapbook will be put together to be presented to him after the dinner. You can email letters to me at [email protected] or ask for my mailing address for hand-written letters or cards.
Dr Ernie saved many lives so let's show him how much he means to us.

He was the only rogue LLMD in all of Canada and we don't have him anymore, bless his heart.
He saw anyone, from anywhere, in his Hope or Vancouver office and turned no one away (unless of course he didn't think they had LD).
He is the bravest man you can imagine; standing up to horrendous pressure from the College of Physicians and Surgeons and even some of his own peers! While he is a family doctor, his background is bacterial infection.
Given awards by the University of British Columbia for his outstanding work and beaten up by the College...you all know the sad refrain.
We're working hard to also clear his good name.

Thanks for your comment, Lou. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia beat him up badly at the same time as the University of British Columbia gave him awards.
Recently, a letter was received by another CanLyme support person from our federal Minister of Health, Tony Clement, in which he thanks, acknowledges and commends Dr Murakami for his work with Lyme disease patients!
Of course we made sure every Lyme denier in Canada received a copy of this letter.

Dr. M spoke with me on the phone (at no charge) for an hour or more on a few occasions as I was considering traveling for treatment. I was unable to to up there for treatment ( still have not really found a doctor) . . . still . . . regarding the mention of a "HERO's AWARD"
here in the states, on NPR (National Public Radio) there is s program based in Colorado called "E-town" - each week they have one or two big musical guests . . . and they also give an award for someone who has done something really great against all odds.
This can be environmental in nature, which is often . . . or community minded projects . . . if it requires an environmental tie-in, well, that is possible as the increase in infected ticks seems to have increased at the same time environmental problems have increased.
Anyway, if anyone familar with Dr. M - or other lyme heroes wants to nominate, just go to the web page for "E-town" - the winners are usually interviewed briefly by phone rather than having to fly to Colorado for the program.
We're looking for true heroes: folks who are quietly working behind the scenes, helping to make their communities a better place. Perhaps it's someone in your own hometown, or it could be a person you've heard of or read about, whose story inspires you.
Whatever the case, take a moment and send in a nomination form. BUT FIRST, BE SURE TO READ "HERE'S WHAT YOU DO" AND CHECK OUT SOME EXAMPLES OF Recent Winners TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR.

Thanks for that, Keebler! We have a similar award in Canada called Unsung Heroes, for which he has been nominated by many of us. In time, we think he'll get it!
The dinner went really well; 110 people sat down for Japanese dinner. Dr Murakami showed his family history on PowerPoint and everyone unfamiliar with his background was amazed. The Murakami family was rounded up during WWII, stripped of their assets, and herded into concentration camps (called something else by the Canadian govt) in Vernon BC. They endured great hardships and this made him all the stronger and more likely to fight injustice.
A recovered Lymie sang "I Did It My Way" dedicated to Dr Murakami and brought everyone to their feet.
He and his entire family were there and had a great time visiting with many of his patients.
Dr Murakami is getting many family doctors coming to him now for consultation treatment of patients, since they can no longer send suspected LD patients directly to him.
He'll work with any doctor, anywhere, anytime. He's keeping quite busy doing this and it makes him happy to help.
