It is so encouraging to read all the posts of those who are at different stages of regaining one's health.
We have one person who is beginning to get out of her wheel chair and move those knees and stand for short periods of time and another who was dx as being in R E M I S S I O N this last week.
congrats to both (don't know how to make the font larger as lyme too does or I would)
Please feel free to join us. Great time of the year to just be out even if it is in a power chair or a drive in the car. AT least we are getting out of the house and moving.

RECAP of week 5 (ADD is kicking in big time so let me know if editing is needed)
Awesome Ali
OK. Wednesday. 4th day on theracycle. Rode 1.6 miles and increased mph to 2 from 1 after 30 min. Rode 60 min total.
Thursday I rode my theracycle almost 2 miles and pedaled 1 MPH for 15 min and 2 MPH for 45 min. The PT is amazed as are the helpers who have seen me with straight, immobilized knees for the last year. And the post fatigue has lessened.
Larkspur
May 21: I walked 45 min today - more of a "spring in my step" than in a long time;
May 24: I walked 62 minutes today
MTree
Mon......1 mile Tue....1 mile
Wed.....preparing for my son's ceremnoy..for that day..graduated....in Respitory Therapy..(so proud
Thur....recoop-ed.....actually..I did more then that........I cleaned...hey ....I vaccumed...dusted...laundry.... I forgot that counts
well......friday...no walking....but did go to dinner and wall-mart with DH.....
Saturday.....1 mile....
Tracy
I have had a rough couple of weeks; one big stressor after another. I have not walked since I last posted.
(Note from KAM: I think this is going on 3rd week but that is OK. We do what we can when we can. Going on 3rd week for me too I think)
I did however have some good days and worked really, really hard at cleaning my basement, got lots of exercise lifting and moving lots of heavy boxes and going up and down stairs. Can we post that here even though it isn't walking?
(Note from KAM: This is great. I know how good it feels to be able to do some organization and cleaning. Those moments are few and far between around here)
Since the UNH conference I've been recovering; it took a lot out of me. Hopefully I'll be able to move around a bit tomorrow.
NOte from KAM: Don't know about you all but I think we are all are looking good!

Sunday am: 20 or 30 min outing in power chair. Beautiful out today. Was raining yesterday. I got soaked. Need water proof clothing although power chair is not supposed to be out in the rain.
(Will time next outing to post office to get a better idea of how long it takes me to get there and back)

Sunday afternoon: Rosie was able to run off leash in the fields by the apartment complex. I watched her play for a while in the sun in my power chair.
then, the brain started doing that inflamed thing so went in the shade but could still keep an eye on her. That got to be too much so called her indoors.
Don't know how long we were out doors but did notice I am starting to get a line on my legs where the shorts are.

Started outside and did a little sunbathing for about 1/2 hour with the two dogs. Then went to the movies with my sons, the new Narnia movie: prince caspian. Came back and and prepared a mexican feast, my sons and I did a lot of cooking. My wife and daughter were at the opening of our neighborhood pool. When everyone was home we feasted. I did walk 1 1/2 miles with the dogs.
It was a fun day, I'll pay for it tomorrow, ate some things out of my diet range. Posted by kam (Member # 3410) on :

Walked 1.5 miles
It's HOT and humid out there!!! I beat the oncoming thunderstorms.
Be safe, everyone!
Larkspur, you're probably walking at least 2 miles when you walk 1 hour+. It takes me 40-50 min to walk 2 miles.
kam.. To make a larger font, you do this:
Type "<" then "font size=6> then what you want larger, then "<"/font>
Leave out the " !
I used size 6 .. you can use something smaller like 4 if you want it smaller.

So far, I have gone to the dog park. Drove there in car, walked in, slouched with feet up, and limped out.
I had people talking to me. Brain just doesn't want to move those legs after trying to process what others are saying to me.
But, am learning to get up and get out before it gets so bad I can't walk out or drive home.
Monday afternoon: outing in power chair. est 20 to 30 min.
TuTu: thanks for letting me know how to do the font. it is so easy to go through and copy and paste your miles because of the larger font.
But, my brain is not working well enough to take in what you typed. HA! I'll try again later. Lyme Brain...sheesh.

Walking for Exercise Suggestions for doing it correctly
(HealthDay News) -- Walking is a safe and easy way to get exercise, but you should maintain proper form to prevent injury.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions:
Swing your arms as you walk.
Walk with your head up, and make sure your back is straight.
Keep your abdomen flat.
Point your toes straight ahead.
Walk with a long, easy stride that doesn't strain you.

1 1/2 hour outing in reclining power chair with leg lifts to water therapy and back.
Did two sets of exercises in therapy pool. Two sets of 6 exercises for 2 min.
Then did a few strokes of the sidestroke, breast, crawl and back stroke without arms.
Very good session today. Last one. next step is the process of having insurance approve more.
Stopped by doctor's office to get the ball rolling.
Traffic noise and movement was too much on the way even with ear muffs on.

Thursday - today I rode 30 min for 1 or 2 MPH and went about 1.5 miles

Awesome Ali! Hang in there! You and Kam are our inspiration these days.
And TuTu . . . you are doing fabulous this week.
3.25 miles for me this morning.
I had a "moment" this morning. Since I started working out and dieting (beginning in March) I have GAINED 13 pounds. I know that some people here would be thrilled with that, but I need to lose weight -- about 40-50 pounds. So it has been more than a bit frustrating.
And so this morning . . . !! What in the H#** am I whining about? I am walking over 3 miles at a time!! I am much stronger than when I started. I haven't had a headache in months! My brain is working! I am well and the luckiest person alive!
Seriously . . . ! Stopped me right in my tracks. Said a prayer of gratitude right there in the middle of the gym. And realized that my weight does not define who I really am.
From now on I will begin each day with a prayer of gratitude for the many blessings in my life.
And all of you walkers, hikers, bikers, crawlers, movers . . . are a blessing.

From Akinwolf:
Friday-does going to the library count?
Akinwolf...in my book it does. The library has been calling my name for quiet some time now.
I was thinking about that question and I think it depends on where you are with your lyme journey.
Taking the trash out was a biggy for years and I usually was not able to do this even in my power chair.
Now, it is something I can rely on being able to do and don't think alot about it anymore.
I was too weak in the past to lift the lid of the dumpster once I got there too. No problem now for the most part.
I have had one day in the past 2 and a half years where I was able to walk into the library and pick out a few DVD's, check them out and walk out. (someone else was driving..don't know if I could have done it if I had added driving to the library too)
Haven't had a day like that since. Even getting there via my power chair would have to be a day when I am doing better than average.
It is about 45 min to get there via the power chair I think. then I would need the stamina, vision and processing skills to be able to see what ever it is I am trying to look at and then the brain and verbal skills to check it out.
So, if it were me...I would count going to the library. Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :
Aliyah....I'm SOOO sorry!! Jerk! I'll be praying for you.

Received this email from Dr. Mercola's web site today...
I know this is a lot to read.....haven't been able to take it all in myself.
But, received this email and wanted to share it...
Realized I forgot the study and will go back and past it now after this one...
This is an interesting study in that it shows how various types of exercise affect the structure of your heart in different ways.
It also shows that you're not necessarily ``born'' to be a good athlete because you were born with a bigger or stronger heart, but that it's the type of training you choose that has the most influence on your performance by building an ``athletic heart.''
Athletes are Built Not Born
In this study, the endurance group consisted of long-distance rowers, whose exercise regimen consisted of daily running, cycling, swimming, rowing or using an aerobic machine with sustained effort for at least 20 minutes a day.
The strength training group was American-style football players doing weight lifting, plyometric exercises (explosive movements to develop muscular power) and sprint running drills.
After three months of organized team training, they found there were significant training-specific changes in the athletes' heart structure and function.
While left ventricle mass increased in both groups, the endurance athletes had better diastolic function in their left ventricle, and enlargement and more efficient contraction and relaxation in both sides of the lower chambers of the heart (atria).
The strength-trained athletes, on the other hand, actually had hypertrophy, or excessive growth, in the muscle of the left ventricle, and reduced diastolic function, with no other structural changes.
Is Your Exercise Prescription Up to Date?
For a change, I agree with the idea to use this type of research to influence and fine-tune your ``exercise prescription.'' Exercise is a critical component of good health, especially as you age, and a good way of looking at it is to view it as a drug that needs to be precisely prescribed for maximum benefit.
Most Americans suffer from an ``exercise deficiency,'' which contributes to two-thirds of the U.S. population being overweight, and tens of millions of others with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes; all of whom desperately need more exercise to control their underlying condition.
Exercise is simply one of the most powerful tools available to drop your insulin levels, and elevated insulin levels are one of the primary drivers for these types of illnesses and weight gain. It is my belief that properly performed exercise is far more powerful for controlling these symptoms than any drug yet developed.
What Type of Exercise Regimen Do YOU Need?
A TRULY effective, well-rounded exercise program must involve all three types of exercise, taking into account exercise intensity and duration for your individual fitness level and goals:
aerobic, endurance workouts (lowers blood pressure) strength training (helps ease muscle and joint pain) interval-type training that includes short bursts of activity at very high intensity that is individualized for your specific fitness level (burns fat) Interval training -- where you break your exercise session into segments with a rest period in-between -- has been proven especially effective at burning greater amounts of fat than one single hour-long session. Newer studies on the specific benefits of interval training also suggest that it may actually provide MORE protection against heart attacks than long durational aerobic type exercises. So, I wouldn't trade in interval training for endurance-style training only.
Even though it wasn't mentioned or included in the study above, high-intensity interval exercises have been shown to DOUBLE the endurance in 75 percent of test subjects, compared to those who did traditional endurance training only! (So just imagine the benefits of interval training compared to doing nothing but pumping iron.)
My personal experience would support that as I have been a long distance runner for the last 40 years, and my heart is so large I have left ventricular hypertrophy on EKG and chest X ray evaluation. This is not pathological in my case but a healthy response to exercise.
I now incorporate interval training in the form of sprints, and strength training through pull-ups, push-ups and dips, rounded out with a game of singles tennis whenever I can. Tennis has become one of my passions. I'm now taking lessons twice a week, working my way up to a 3.5 player, and hope to be a 4.0 someday. It's just great fun; something I look forward to each week.
Avoid This Common Pitfall When Starting a New Exercise Routine
Now, if you are overweight or out of shape, you can start with walking. Most heavy people start with walking and it's an excellent choice, as it is low-risk and inexpensive.
The major problem with walking, however, is that many people become fit relatively rapidly but don't increase the intensity of the workouts as they become more fit.
Remember that once you become comfortable with your routine, you need to increase the intensity in order to continue reaping the benefits.
Push the intensity of your workouts so you are going just hard enough to where it's difficult to carry on a conversation with someone next to you. If you can easily talk to someone you simply are not going hard enough to give your body the benefits it needs. An additional benefit of this technique is that you don't need to monitor your heart rate to make sure you're exercising at peak intensity.
Remember to Listen to Your Body
One of the key principles I teach and believe in is to listen to your body.
If your body will not allow you to exercise, either due to pain or worsening of your underlying condition, then you have no practical option but to honor your body's signals and exercise less or not at all.
Even though your body desperately needs the exercise to improve, you will only get worse if you violate your current limitations. So you may have to start with as little as just minutes a day. That's okay.
Apply the Take Control of Your Health Program and as your body gradually improves so will your tolerance to exercise, so continue to push yourself until you reach the daily 90-minute level.
Need Inspiration? Remember All the Benefits!
Even if you have no aspirations of becoming a professional athlete, the benefits of even small amounts of exercise are far too valuable to ignore. Aside from developing a stronger ``athletic heart,'' exercise will also help you:
Sleep better Lose weight, gain weight, or maintain weight, depending on your needs Improve your resistance to fight infections Lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes Help your brain work better, making you smarter Do You Need Help Getting Motivated?
If you are having trouble motivating yourself to exercise, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can help. EFT is a form of psychological acupuncture treatment I recommend in order to optimize your emotional health.
It can help you remove the mental or emotional blocks that prevent you from successfully implementing your program. You can learn the technique with my free manual and discover more about the connection between your emotional well-being and your overall health.
You can also combine EFT with Medical Hypnosis to create an unconscious desire to exercise every day. This is session six on the hypnosis program I recommend for long term weight loss.

Workouts Sculpt Heart As Well As Muscles
Exercise can cause structural changes in the heart -- and the changes can vary depending on the type of exercise.
Researchers found that endurance athletes showed an increase in the size of both their left and right ventricles after 90 days of team training. However, athletes who only did strength training had excessive growth in their left ventricles, but no change at all in their right ventricle size.
In addition, the ability of the left ventricle to fully relax between beats (diastolic function) was enhanced in the endurance athletes, but it worsened in the strength trainers.
It is possible that this could point the way towards tailored recommendations for rehabilitation and recreational exercise for people with heart problems.

The snake training was very interesting and went very well.
They had one large rattler with rattles. (They had removed the fangs)
And another smaller sanke without rattles and of course fangs)
they had a big chart showing all the poisonous snakes in the area but that part of my brain was not working well enought to read the chart and see the pictures.
The trainers came from a couple of hours or so out of the area.
I have no doubt that Rosie will avoid all snakes now.
They used a shock collar and whenever she even looked at a snake she got a little shock.
When she first went in she almost back right up and stepped on the big one with rattles...she was not aware it was there at all.
But, she would not even go near it after the shock thing even with the trainer trying to tug her closer to the snake while she was on the leash. She was very aware of the snake then.
She would jump up on her high legs and got caught in the leash and had her front paws hanging over the leash that was about waist high.
She kept wanting to come to me.
I know this will work for a long time with Rosie. She has a good memory.
She was attacked by a Golden Retreiver when we first started going to the dog park.
A year later, we came to the gate of the dog park and she started backing up and refused to go in.
I couldn't figure out what the problem was until I saw the golden retriever in the far corner of the dog park.
We did not go in that day.
the man that was co ordinating the training was doing so because he was out with his dog one day and his dog was bitten.
It cost him $800 for treatment and he was lucky his dog survived. This was years ago.
I am thankful for the person who paid the cost to get Rosie trained.
It is such a relief to not worry now. I tend to stress easily now sense coming down with lyme and this was a big stressor.
Now when Rosie is digging after something that is in the boulders, I will know it is not a snake.

Kam -- Thanks so much for the exercise information. Very interesting. Is this from Dr. Mercola?
I have wanted to research EFT, and your post was a reminder to me to do that. I have been using self-hypnosis for the past week to help myself obtain a desire for exercise. (I was trained in hypnosis therapy last October).
I procrastinated with exercising in the early part of last week, but was up bright and early the rest of the week to go to the gym. So, perhaps it is working. I will continue with the self-hypnosis and see if there is an improvement in my desire to exercise. And I will begin the research on EFT to see if it would be beneficial to me.
The snake training . . . what a relief to see the results for Rosie. A huge sigh of relief now when you take her on the trail that she will not be harmed by snakes. God Bless the person who paid for the training.
Keep moving, friends.

yes. it is from Dr. Mercola's email. I went back and added that as I thought I had...oops.
And yes. Blessings to the person who paid for the training and the people who take the time to do this.
another lady who walks with her dogs in the woods 3 times per week just happened to be at the dog park this am.
she got the training too. So glad she happened to come to the dog park instead of taking them on the trail today.
There was quiet a gathering at the dog park watching the training.
They have two fenced in areas at the dog park so it worked out well....one for observers and one ofr those being trained.
the dogs would not even come close to the fence that was between the two areas after training.

I guess I'm really slacking off. But I didn't want anyone thinking I disappeared.
We were having guests last night and since I don't keep up on the housework the way I should, it was the mad dash to clean the house, so did it the day before, thinking I could relax the next day.
But I got as far as the bathrooms and crashed. The next day, I was in so much pain, I couldn't see straight and hardly remember the evening.
After 18 months of treatment, shouldn't I be in a better place than this????? Don't get me wrong...I'm MUCH better than when I was first diagnosed. I wasn't even walking back then. I can walk now, but even a little effort seems to knock me down for the count.
I got my pedometer out with all these good intensions, but still having set backs with day to day living, just trying to stay caught up. Perhaps it's the higher doses of meds?
In any case, I haven't deserted anyone and really proud of you that are pushing through this. I'm sure I'll get caught up to you, but for now, I just didn't want it looking like I wasn't responding anymore.
Just going through a bad slump, but I AM here.
Cathy

Well, no biking for me today. I listened inside and there was a NO. Too much large muscle involvement, I suspect. David told me he clearly wanted to end the marriage. We love each other, but he feels we can't do what we need to together. I met with our marital therapist by myself today - better get used to it. We both feel he just needs to bail. He always bails. After 11 yrs I wished it would be different. And here I am in a small town we just moved to a yr ago and I am mostly housebound.
I know he pain will decrease. Over time.
On another note, my friend bought an Audio Visual Entrainment device over. I tried it 2 days in a row. I feel mellow. It can also be used for endurance training.
Didn't do much movement today. Thanks for the support.
Tracy, how are you walking if you are housebound? Aliyah

Just wanted to report in that I had an unusual lunch time.
First I put a small roast in the crock pot, then I made 4 hamburger patties and put them on to cook.
While they were cooking, I watered the potted cacti on the patio and took the two or three things that were in the dishwasher and put them away, and washed the silverware that was in the sink.
I was on my feet the whole time. Very unusual for me to do this. I have gone from not being able to put something in the crock pot to walking myself through each step of putting something in the crock pot to this almost being my old self.
Amazing. Time will tell if it will last.
Took a nap after lunch. Wore myself out. HA!
Woke up and thought..wow..wondering what the neighbors are cooking...smells great.
took me awhile to catch on taht it was coming from my kitchen.
Put a yam in the oven to bake and go along with the roast.
Ah yes. I also was able to put the left over hamburger in the freezer.
To a normal person this does make sense. But, to someone that has not had the brain power to do something like this for a long time...it doesn't make sense either.
But, I think I could get use to it.
Couldn't find my timer or the screen I use to put over the meat to keep it from splashing greese everywhere when cooking hamburger patties.
This happens when someone else has been in your kitchen. I looked in every cupboard...there are not many....and no sight of these things.
don't have a clue how long they have been missing. I know they were here a year ago when I moved in.
then again, my brain will not see somethign the first few times around and then pick up on it later.
Also wanted to add that I went from potted house plants to cacti when I came down with lyme because I killed off all my potted houseplants.
With the small cacti it would be a treat when I could water them and then it would usually be two or three and then rest, and then a few more and then rest.
Today, I watered them all at once. Need to carry pitcher of water from kitchen sink to patio but it is a very short distance.
