Okay what exactly is a troll? I've seen this term bandied about and I'm wondering what the exact definition is.

Dear John S,
A troll is an individual who partakes in abusive behavior towards others in chatrooms or on forums. These people normally start arguments intentionally. I have had the unfortunate experience of meeting some. I am not a confrontational person, and do my best to avoid conflict. I have enough of that with family members.

I certainly do not need any from anywhere else. Trolls also tend to cyber-stalk, which is against the law. Such hateful individuals are emotional vampires. They instigate arguments with other people and literally feed off of the emotional response. Avoiding those people is best for your health. I hope this answers your question.

Sincerely,
Jin

Dear John S,
You are welcome! Trolls on the internet are different than those of magical origins. Personally, I prefer those of the magical variety. Who could pass up those cute little pointy-haired keychains? I still have a number of them around here somewhere. They are probably in some strange spot in the garage or shed.

Sincerely,
Jin

I personally liked the smurfs myself. I think I bought the whole collection for a girlfriend in the 5th grade. I wonder if she still has them?

LOL 99 guys and one female, I'm surprised they didn't have irritable smurf.

I wouldn't want to get into an argument with anyone from that village!

Hi John, Sometimes we have problems with the non-believers of lyme disease. They will start problems in posts with us lymies. Saying we're imagining our symptoms, stuff like that. Or they will act like they are sick too, but they can be pretty easy to spot.

When I first posted on here someone accused me of being a troll because I said Lyme's Disease. I didn't know better because that's what my own Dr. called it.

Posted by John S (Member # 19756) on :

Well I can't imagine people wasting their time like that. Why on earth come here to do that.

If I were well I could think of a thousand better things to do.

Maybe they are frustrated smurfs =)

The only thing that has it worse than a Lymie might be a smurf!

I've found myself stuck with an illness that no one can explain and here I have people that can relate and will listen to my rants, well at least sometimes.

I know it's all hard to understand. ANd I know the harder the we try to convince people about the controversy behind this disease the crazier we sound. Hey John, have you read Tincups Camp A vs Camp B? I'm gonna PM it to you. It helps explain it all.

Did you ever meet Gary Gygax LisaS?

When I was a kid I loved his game. He was from Lake Geneva.

Posted by LisaS (Member # 10581) on :

No I don't think I have. What game did he have?

Posted by John S (Member # 19756) on :

He invented the ultimate nerd game, Dungeons and Dragons! He just passed away.

When I was 12 I played it every weekend.

Posted by LisaS (Member # 10581) on :

No I didnt know him. So you were one of those kids who watched Dr Who too werent ya? LOL.

Posted by John S (Member # 19756) on :

In the 80's yes I liked the Dr Who with the scarf.

Also in the 80's every kid played dungeons and dragons. It was a fad back then. Then a couple years later it got the nerd stigma.

Posted by LisaS (Member # 10581) on :

Yeah I remember my neighbors brother had it set up and it would take them a month to play a game...

And anyways, what is wrong with being a nerd in the 80's. I was there with my stonewashed jeans and feathered hair!

Posted by John S (Member # 19756) on :

Nothing is wrong with nerdiness. Nerds are the one's who are strong enough to be themselves. You know they aren't fake =)

Feathered hair, Jordache Jeans and a comb in your back pocket?

Back to the original question, sometimes "trolls" come here to discredit ILADS or some LLMDs or even spy for insurance companies.

It's important to remember that we have no idea who is on the other end of the screen. Most of us here intend to help or seek ways to get better. But, there have been some who are here to make trouble and have blantantly (sp?) insulted and demeaned members here.

Lately, it's been very, very good around here, though. It'd still be nice to not require sites such as this but, given the situation, this is a wonderful place to learn more to become empowered.

Hey, I was a kid in the 80s, and I never played D&D.

I never had Jordache jeans either--I wanted them, but my parents told me if I wanted those I had to buy them myself.

After it took me I don't know how long to earn that $40, they didn't look so great anymore.

well today i feel like a troll. haven't had a bath, my hair needs grooming and i'm _itchig and moaning fit to beat the band...

if i did have a bridge, i'd be under it, or is it a cave? either way, i could qualify....

oh yeah, i'm an original dr. who (tom baker) fan from way back...and red dwarf....

Interestng Lisa...My sisters GF who is an RN in NY says Lyme's disease. Many do it doesn't bother me. Also, if you look at the lab slip when they order bloodwork it is actually listed as lymes on there.

Dear John S,
There are a lot of weirdos out there. The internet is dangerous. You have to be extremely careful. You never know what mentally disturbed person could be stalking you or hacking into your system. I would love to be like Hardison on Leverage. I have been thinking about going to school to become a professional hacker, because the government needs them for terrorism protection.

Now, onto the smurfs! You are right, it was odd all of those males smurfs, and only one girl. I have an annoying cousin like Brainy Smurf. Do you remember at the end of the episode where he would be saying "I was right! I was right!"? They then would kick him out of the village. I wish we could do that to that cousin. [lol]

Dear Lisa,
The 80s were great! There was ALF, Jem and the Holograms, GI Joe, and so much more! Hunter, Spencer for Hire, Murder She Wrote, and all kinds of other terrific shows were on then. Jordache was nice, when you could afford it. Feathered hair was easier to buy.

Sincerely,
Jin

Well I like to consider myself weird, but in a good way =)

randibear,

I could probably find a bridge to hide under, but don't trolls usually ask riddles?

Lol, my Lymebrain isn't clever enough to come up with troll riddles.

The only one I have is one I made up when I was a kid----

What goes "STOMP nothing STOMP nothing STOMP nothing?"

A giant with one leg. [lol]

My husband didn't get it.

Posted by John S (Member # 19756) on :

Well you'd probably get a lot of dinners out of that one riddle =) To be a good troll you only need one!

Dear John S,
I consider myself weird in a good way as well. [Wink] My family thinks I am the black sheep. I sit there and think "Have you met each other?" [bonk] I am still waiting for the joyous news I am actually adopted. Family is best avoided in my opinion.

Dear LisaS,
It was a cute riddle! [Smile] I got it. Maybe you have to have Lyme? If we have to be sick, we might as well enjoy being demented. [Razz] Regardless, having a sense of humor is essential to healing. Laughter boosts immunity!

Dear bettyg,
I know! We watch "Murder She Wrote" a lot! My favorite episodes feature Jerry Orbach as Harry McGraw. You have to love him! It is still hard to believe he has been gone several years already. [Frown] There is a major estate battle between one of his sons and his second wife.

Sincerely,
Jin

Wow that is quite an existensive analysis of trolls.

I like to debate and make people think, but not in a malicious way. I like to play devil's adovocate sometimes, but according to this that doesn't seem like a good idea here.

One thing I never got about Murder she wrote was that everyone kept dying around this woman and no one ever suspects her. I don't know I'd be afraid to be around a woman that just happened to be at 353 murder scenes =)

I think the term troll or trolling predates the web, probably back to BBS days. I am more familiar with it as trolling, the person doing it is a troll. It is a behavior similar to trolling in fishing - you set out the bait and when you get a bite you try to keep the fight going.

Trolling usually refers to a poster that will deliberately post information that they believe will get an passionate counter-response from another member, and then the troll will try to keep posters engaged in argument over the issue.

I would say that posting an unpopular opinion on a forum is not always trolling, but repeating the same unpopular point over and over again just to get others to react is.

lisa, thanks for the nice comment; it's great to be back helping others too. [group hug] [kiss]

jin, yes, i know the one you mean about jerry orbach; it was just on again recently. so sad about his children and his current wife fighting over the estate.

a death brings out the worst in all of us; you don't think so until you experience it first hand.

yes, john, as you mentioned on this board, it's best NOT to do some of the things you mentioned for the reasons above...... we're all sick and neuroly.

Dear John S,
I always wondered that about Jessica myself. Everyone is getting killed around the woman, yet she rarely is a suspect. There were a couple of times she landed in jail. I remember her nephew Grady saying she was "detained". [lol] In real life, police would never allow someone outside of the force to participate in homocide investigations.

Dear bettyg,
I found out later there was a spin-off "The Law and Harry McGraw". It was cancelled. I know I would have loved it had I had the chance to see it. Hopefully, Jerry's family will find a fair resolution to their dispute. Something tells me he was not the type to stiff his kids.

Sincerely,
Jin
