Hi All,
I'm just curious, i was diagnosed in 06/09 with lyme and am wondering what a long distance runner is supposed to eat Carb wise. I'm lucky that on most days I can still run, but on other days it seems so difficult to even get out of bed. The twitching and jerking seems to bother me most.

Are there any runners out there that can tell me what types of food they are able to eat for energy.

Thanks in advance for your help

From one marathon runner to another -- I wish I had the answer. I haven't run AT ALL since 7/08 due to lyme. My worst symptom is fatigue. But the good news is, my fatigue has seemed to lift and I am walking up to 5 miles a day and I have started yoga & pilates.

I am starting slow to get my body 'awake' after laying on the couch for 1 yr. Plus, I need to take off the 30lbs I gained while sick.

On the days when you can't get out of bed, don't push yourself to run. Your body needs the energy to fight off the lyme. That is what my LLMD told me.

He also told me once I feel better and my body is telling me it is OK to run, that the night before I am going running, or that day it would be OK to have some whole wheat pasta or baked pots. He said, just don't be eating them everyday & in large amounts.

Hang in there!

I was a marathon runner. Even though I can't run anymore, I do excerise and follow a strict high protien lo carb diet, recomended by my llmd who is a runner with lyme.

Okay...we'll this is not a runner specific answer even though Betty is giving me credit for running marathons(just 5ks) but i have never totally restricted carbs...i have been very selective about the quality of the carbs however. i eat a lot of fiber...a bit addicted.

But from what i've read if you can keep your digestion moving and pratice good oral hygienne you can avoid yeast infections...thus far that has been the case for me.

a couple of quality carbs in my uneducated opinion:

kashi cereal
Fiber one bars
rye toast--rye creates less inflammation than other breads
whole wheat pasta- yeh i know not the best but not the worst
whole grain rice

but seriously....this is not based on any science just general good nutrition which says you can have some sugar if you take it with high fiber..i.e quality carbs.

Just my two cents....

search for 5k bald dude Lyme in youtube if you want to see me in action...i've been a bit slowed in the past 2 months but i am back on the horse again.

Keep The Faith,

Dave

For me I can make it through most of the week with little carbs because I am a time-crunched athlete who is unable to find time to ride/run for more than an hour during the week. But on the weekend, when I have a chance to go longer/long I just cannot finish without carbs.

I use Hammer Perpetuem when I go longer. Hammer products do not contain sugar, so I callem the least of evils.

Also I have to mind the electrolytes more than ever now, because I seem to sweat more than ever. The Hammer products, especially Endurolytes, are good.

And I like Nuun too, with a little soda water for fun.
