I wouldn't say hogwash. Certain OTC meds can actually get me all keyed up like allergy meds and the such. And some have caffeine in them.
Also anxiety will definetly cause insomnia.
And if you snore loud enough, you can wake yourself up.

I bet hormonal issues are another major cause.
I've never really bought the anxiety reason.....I'm sure there is some validity to it, but in a lot of cases it seems like a cop out. It seems like if you are anxious, something else is causing the anxiety, like hormone issues, neurochemicals, amino acids, etc. Those things also affect sleep.
