We haven't had a new car in years.... leased a little Scion in August '09. Now it's a mess.
Neither one of us is totally sure how bad the damage is because it was dark and the car was parked on the side of the road when the tow truck came. ( I wasn't about to walk out in the tall weeds to see the damage!)
He was driving on the highway (about 65 mph) when he came upon a deer standing in the middle of his lane! He swerved to miss it and ended up hitting it with the right front and right side of his car.
He ended up IN THE MEDIAN!! (it was a 4-lane highway)
Fortunately, there was no one in the lane next to him or it would have been really bad news.
The median was basically a very wide ditch, but he was able to drive out of it and get his car to the right side of the road.
We had to wait more than an hour and a half for the tow truck. This is going to cost us more money than we have, darn it. We were already looking forward (NOT!) to a "dry" summer!
Thank goodness he was OK... and all of his professional instruments in the back were OK too... talk about a disaster.. THAT would have been one!!!

sorry for the need.
Try contacting auto body dept of a local college to keep repair cost down.
Or at least a referral of a second year student or recent grad that will work out of his garage
sometimes helps to 'shop' older established salvage yards around for 'used' parts
even if insurance covers it,,, the cheaper it is,,, cheaper for you, since they often surcharge your insurance
Our state is going to increase hunting seasons to depop to reasonable levels.

Don... it was towed to the Toyota Dealership... aarrrgh... but yes, we have insurance. It's the deductible and the towing we have to pay. We have a towing service, but it will only pay up to $150 and I would bet it's more than that.
kam.. I wasn't in the car, but went to pick him up. He was about 15 miles from home. ( or less )

Lymetoo... who had the "oh crap!" look, the deer or hubby Im glad your hubby wasn't hurt. So sorry about the car... But your MAN is ok and thats whats more important.

that is so scary when you are faced with hitting a deer..
..someone always gets it....usually the deer....
I had a chuckle though about looking at the damage and not wanting to go into the tall weeds...
our minds are always thinking about those ticks....
I'm glad your Dh is ok....better the car got it then him...
what happened to the deer?????

I hit one 25 years ago and STILL flip when I see glowing eyes at night. And seeing Bambi & co anywhere near the side of the road just about makes my heart stop.

on the other hand, the good news is that there's one less tick-bearing deer in the world.
for all you know, maybe the death of exactly that deer saved someone else from contracting Lyme...

Remember that there was a reason for this.
Maybe that deer prevented something else from happening.

I know it was one of God's creatures, but the powers that be have allowed the deer population in this country put us at risk. Not just diseases either.
Serious injuries and deaths are rising due to deer and auto accidents. But my state protects the dear deer population?????
Wheels can be replaced, but loved ones can't.

Oh Lymetoo, so sorry to hear about your husband's accident! Glad hubby's OK! What a pain about the car!
The husband of a friend of mine hit a deer a few years ago with his stationwagon.
He thought he'd at least get some freezer food out of it, so he picked up the dead deer and put it in the back of the car.
About 20 minutes later, the deer woke up...

you know down here it's a constant threat of deer, especially around the hill country.
i'm glad your husband is ok tho. hitting deer can be a serious risk.
glad you have insurance.
what happened to the deer?
we had people hit a hit and it killed the driver and the deer. it went through the windshield.

I know. I am so thankful he was OK... really scared me that he ended up in the median!! yikes!
We don't know what happened to the deer. It may be OK.. but gotta be pretty wounded. We came through there yesterday evening and didn't see any dead deer there... but one about 5 miles south of there!
Yep, wasn't about to walk into the weeds to see the car! I did find out that the rear right door was damaged. The deer and hubby were lucky he didn't hit him head-on.
And yes, I've heard several good stories on deer waking up in the back of a vehicle. Even one story from my childhood that was pretty funny!
Sure am hungry for venison though!

Glad your hubby is okay. Those deer-car accidents can be pretty extreme.
When I lived in the Midwest, wow...it was such a part of life. I was always hearing about friends hitting deer, sometimes getting their cars totaled.
Now not living in the Midwest anymore, just thinking about it brings me back. There are some parts of the country where people don't need to live in fear that a deer is about to dart in front of your car!
Wow, I just read that from 1993-2007, Texas has had more fatalities from deer-car accidents than any other state. Yikes!
I love reading about statistics like that, seeing how the numbers break down. Very interesting. Be careful!!!!
When I used to drive those roads where deer were seen, I would always be scanning, looking for one that could be making a beeline for my car!
Deer are beautiful but oh so dangerous.

Sunny... I'm actually in Missouri, not Texas... just WISH I were in Texas!! We moved here 14 yrs ago. I'm a 6th generation Texan, so I'm really not supposed to be here!!
I imagine Texas has more fatalities because everyone drives like a bat out of H... when they're on the open road. heheeehhee
There are a lot of deer here in MO, but we don't see them very often.. We live in the Ozarks and the deer have plenty of places to hide out.
In Texas, they're everywhere. I used to see them all the time when we lived in San Antonio... in the daytime as well as at night.
Yes, we have insurance, but that deductible is a big hit for us.
Still waiting on the car to be fixed.

Hey toots..Sorry about the car but thankful your hubby is ok..He is lucky to be alive.
We have a friend that almost died a few years ago. She hit the deer and it went thru her windshield and knocked her out and kept kicking her .Some boys on the way to high school were first on the scene.
They were sure she was dead with all of the blood and had to break deers neck to make it stop hurting her.
Many touch and go days and surgeries, she is almost her self again..But + for LD.
At night, I always look for eyes. Our area is full of deer.

Very lucky. He was driving at 65mph on the highway. So he only had the amount of time to slow down after seeing the deer in his headlights...not much time! He swerved and hit it with the right side of his car... not head-on, thank goodnes!
He could have been killed by someone in his left lane too.. but there was no one there.

I hit a deer on a two lane road on a cliff above the ocean. Dropoff on one side, steep bank on the other. No way to avoid the deer,which just jumped down on the road in front of the car.
Sometimes you really can't avoid them. Sorry about the car, lymetoo.

EEK!! about your experience!!
That's what scares me about deer... you have no control over what they will do. My husband drives that road 5 nights a month. UGH.
on a lighter note... We had a friend in Texas who was driving down the highway one evening (twilight time, I think) and a deer jumped OVER his little convertible sports car. He felt the deer's feet graze the top of his head!!
