DS, 11, is being switched to Flagyl, after experiencing severe mood swings (Herx) from Augmentin and Zithromax for almost 4 weeks. He is diagnosed with Lyme and Bartonella. Any advice on how to make life easier for him. He is hating school-not wanting to go. Very defiant and snappish. On the plus side-his Bart rash has diminished and his cognitive skills are improving. Also, he takes Diflucan and many supplements.

Flagyl can be rough...prepare him and your family and let everyone know it will get better. Flagyl for me made me so depressed, I cried a lot. Just know that it is essesntial to get well.

My son hated Flagyl because it gave him a strong metallic taste in his mouth. He is very taste sensitive. One thing that helped was using a straw when drinking.

I also ramped him up on the dose. I know many start out taking the full dose. But I started at 1/4 tab of 250mg a day and ramped up from there. The physician that ordered it told me to stop when I reached a dose that I felt better on. That was a very small dose of 1/4 tab in the AM and 1/2 tab in the PM.

I don't blame your son on hating school. Who could want to be there when they feel like they do?! Many schools will work with you for a home tutor. Remember, gaining his health is more important than school IMHO.

Hang in there Mom,
Karen

Thanks for the advice. I have been letting him sleep and go to school later. We will start the Flagyl on Thurs. I'm scared for him.
