When I walked out my front door last night, I was greeted by 3 deer.
How many others have deer come across there yards!
I'm seriously thinking about moving this summer. I love them but, I also hate them too - for obvious reasons!

UGH... We used to live where there were deer in our yard. I even caught one eating my hanging plant on my front porch one night!
I have a forest behind me .. but never see any deer. They are there .. somewhere.
I wouldn't blame you a bit for moving!

I hear exactly what you're saying, Steve. I ditto your sentiment.
When we moved out here, we were so excited to see deer in the fields at night, we bought a spotlight to find them better. It was such a fun thing to do with the kids.
Now, I dream of driving around with a shotgun.
In my head, I know it's not the deer as much as the rodents that spread the ticks around our house, but my heart yells, "help me, save me!"
It's enough to make me, the country girl at heart, want to move into the city!

We live in upstate new york, the deer roam all over here. Sometimes they are in the back yard.
I have been trying to sell and move away for about 5 years now,
Since I got lyme, I have gained 30 pounds for no reason and continue to gain every so often.
Yesterday, I went to the local high school to see if they had a running track; which they do.
And was surprised the school posted a sign with a large tick warning "Lyme".
The area around the school is wooded, so I guess the deer graze nearby.
I may have to go further out to try to avoid these pests.

I live in the city and still got bit! And I don't go hiking/camping.

No deer in my backyard and I still have managed two tick attachments.
I love deer. I don't want one living in my house, but
It doesn't bother me to see them roaming around.
As long as they stay away from the road while I'm driving!

Hey penguingirl, I know what you mean by (not enjoying summer BBQ's).
I love a good BBQ, always have. Now when I have one or go to one - all I think about are ticks.
I focus on people/kids - sitting/playing on the grass. People weaning flip-flops, kids running around having so much fun, and here I am thinking - life really sucks, kids can't even have some fun without possibly getting very sick

Steve....I'd suggest moving to Texas since "There is no lyme in Texas". (I was told this by at least 3 Dr's here)

That's true!!
--I actually believe it is better there than many places .. but if you get bit you are DONE since there are no doctors to treat you!!
I would never have been diagnosed if we had not moved out of TX in '96 .. That is for sure.

OH DEER My neighbor put out a salt block to attract deer to his back yard EEEEKKKK!
I will shoot them with a cross bow if I get a chance,no one can hear that ta woink .
More important to control mice than deer.
Take an old radiator hose nail it to a 2x4 fill it with farm store blue mouse killer,and set it out back.
Cats and dogs cant get the poison inside the hose but mice and small rats can.

Deer arent the real problem,,,mice are a larger part of the equasion.
Worry more about mouse problems and it will be more productive. Wind up tin trap boxes work well in outbuildings and garages.
I actually know some people that would rather have mice in their house than get rid of them,,,they think they are cute.
Do you know mice dont pee like regular mammals. They excrete their urine thru their feet,,,so everywhere they scurry and walk/run they are excreteing on.
In your food cupboards, stove drawer, countertops,,,do I need to say more??
BEST mouse in house defense is to caulk and fix every little crack all around the house and up under the edge.
Not leaving doors open, unscreened windows. Not let pets run in and out. I see those pet doors as giant tick doors.
Letting your dog roam outside, come in and flop on your couch/beds is asking for trouble.
Another cheap mouse poison holder is piece of PVC pipe with cap on each end and an inch or touch bigger hole in each end. Mice love those and feel safe inside.
Put a brick or rock on it to prevent pet playing.
wood traps with cheese works best indoors. or disopable traps. Poison indoors can lead to smelly dead ones in walls where you cant get to.
UNLESS your name is Tincup and you have mice with PHD degrees and too smart to trap. They all make a fatal mistake sooner or later.
And IF your mice have names maybe YOU need a check up at the mental health station, while you are checking out your lyme.

I too believe rodents are as big a problem as deer. If you have ever had a mouse in your house, you have ticks in your house too. I found a tick walking across the venetian blind in the bathroom.
I have a two hundred year old house, so the mice here have ancestors predating the Civil War. There are so many dead mouse carcasses behind my walls and in my attic, that I believe the mass of them little furry mouse skeletons has actually increased the R-value of my insulation.
I have stopped feeding the birds for two years now. Hate to say it, but if you are feeding the birds, you are feeding rodents. Last Fall I caught about 35 assorted rodents in my yard: field mice, voles, moles, and chipmunks. Yes, the chipmunk is the cutest of all rodents, but a major spreader of ticks.
Excellent trap for indoor or outdoor use is the Ketch-All multiple-catch trap. Set it once and catch as many as eight rodents.

I don't like stepping on grass let alone seeing deer roam by my house. I have a small woods behing my house and I have seen deer. I want to move, but can't afford it.
A year or so ago I hit a deer with my car and its blood and guts covered it. Its hair was especially everywhere. I was so revulsed.
From what I've heard the tick need to the deer to reproduce, so getting rid of them may reduce Lyme. Supposedly on a few islands where they have gotten rid of the deer, Lyme has significantly decreased. So I'm all for culling Bambi. Lord knows we can never get rid of the mice and rats.

Here they just went to the ends of the earth to save 3 of them.
They drained a big lake last fall to freeze out a dangerous mussel invasion. A terrible condition that kills fish anyway.
Lake is one big mud puddle with thousands of cars driving past every day in a pretty large city.
Three deer probably after a drink from remaining puddle get stuck/mired/ in the mud. They didnt know what to do with them.
Finnally tried approaching in an air boat and tranquilizing them, pulling them out and trying to save them.
2 didnt make it at all. News footage showed third convulsing and barely holding on,,,coming out of tranquilizer all covered in mud.
Thought they would have at least washed it off some before filming it and it coming out of tranq.
Then they say we have too many and they extend hunting season. They spent probably thousands in manpower and time,materials to 'save' 3 they couldnt anyway.
Doubt if third one survives either. Dont get me wrong,its a sad story all the way around, but when to say when???
Not a lot different than being in wrong place wrong time and jumping out in front of a passing car!!!!

I understand what you're saying Don. But, I couldn't stand around and watch anything/anyone suffer.
I would have jumped in and helped too.
I don't think I could ever be a hunter. I can't see how anyone can kill anything that's just standing there.
Most hunters shot and kill animals while they're standing still. - !

I'm getting our house ready to sell now. I was dxd with ALS last year but since the abx are working I think I have lyme.
I probably won't go outside much this summer but I worry about my family. If I got this sick, maybe its a gene thing so I don't want me child to get it too.
We're probably going to lost alot of money but I just don't feel safe here anymore.
