Help!

I've fallen off the diet wagon!

I'm mostly kidding... but I do admit that my ability to avoid Halloween candy today is gone.

It's like a dam has burst.

We'll... back on the anti-yeast diet tomorrow. Today, I'll double up on my probiotics!

Lesson oh young grasshopper:

wait to buy the candy the day of Halloween - latest as possible.

DO NOT buy the kind you like.

next morning quickly take it to work, or give to a neighbor who works...get it out of the house.

and no hiding under the dish towels any small leftovers....or the freezer - will still chip my teeth eating frozen.

Fondly
Elder hunting sugar

That would have happened to me if I had bought any. [bonk]

Haha - take some charcoal binders to bind them up maybe??

[lol]

Don't we wish that would work??

Funny, it doesn't tempt me at all. Now, buy some kale chips or dark chocolate. ... or brussel sprouts (my thing right now, why??? ) and I can't control my appetite. Store bought candy, eww.

Just eat it and don't kill yourself over it. Diet again tomorrow. No need to be obsessive about it!! [Smile] Enjoy!

Well, my wife bought candy for trick or treating finite boost ki Nesbit can resist. But not Twizzlers. And then I came into work and they have even MORE!

Posted by penguingirl (Member # 28688) on :

Mmm I love dark chocolate.

I have to learn how to make kale chips. I eat kale all the time - like 3 x a day.. need some varation!

I am not a fan of store bought candy as well. but I do have a weakness for Trader Joe's GF dark chocolate mints. They are good cold in the fridge..

Funny Dogs and Cats....

Remove tempation

Get it out of the house

Bring it over here. HA! Just kidding.

But, the senior citizens here would enjoy a bowl full of candy in the foyer.

Sometimes I make kale chips .... sometimes I buy them. I have backed off the kale and started eating brussel sprouts, which I've always hated. I melt tons of butter in my cast iron skillet, then place cut brussel sprouts face down and cook until brown. SO GOOD!! Who knew? LOL

You are describing a bout of CandidaTreata or TrickOrTreataKeta. It is a seasonal one, generally brief, developing near the end of October, peaking on October 31, and hopefully dissipating in the first week or two of November. Please let us know if you have any lingering symptoms.

I like brussel sprouts too but have been way too lazy to chop up each little brussel sprout!
I should just stick them all in my food processor..

HAha - Robin!

Posted by JeniferM (Member # 31996) on :

You chop up your brussel sprouts? I just steam them whole. Don't they all fall apart after you chop them?

Posted by Kudzuslipper (Member # 31915) on :

I'm right with you...I've been "pretty" good lately...but I keep eying that unopened assorted bag of goodies... my only saving grace is it is unopened... when it is open tonight, I may not be able to resist.

But do tell me about Kale chips.... you can buy them?

Posted by penguingirl (Member # 28688) on :

Yeah somehow I enjoy eating brussel sprouts chopped up like a coleslaw style.

Then I add chopped onions and brown them together.

It just takes a lot of effort for me to do that so I don't eat them too often.

I don't buy or give out candy on Halloween anymore.
There are all kinds of things you can give instead:
Stickers
Temp tattoos
glow in the dark sticks, necklaces, etc.
money

Tada! no temptation and no contributing to the neighborhood sugar high! [Big Grin]

Hey,

I must be doing something right! I went to Costco today to get candies and just for old time's sake, popped a bite size Snicker bar in my mouth (my favorite childhood candy). And what do you know... I don't like it at all!! For some reasons it was so yummy way back when... but now it's way too sweet!! =============================

Alice in Lymeland, brussel sprouts and Kale dehydrated are our versions of potato chips. They are very delicious. For some reasons dehydrating them make the flavor come out more. At bit of sea salt and it's beautiful!! [Smile]

Great way to make Kale chips

melt 1 TBSP coconut oil
add 1 TBSP apple cider vinegar
salt to taste

dip pieces of kale in liquid
bake on a cookie sheet @ 200 for 40- 60 minutes

I have some dehydrated kale - can I dip it in the coconut oil, vinegar & salt and bake in the oven?

Will they turn out okay if they were dried before?

Your human! I did it too. Who cares if we blow it with sugar on
occasion. We still need to enjoy a few things in life.

My husband bagged up all the leftovers and took them to work...I didn't even have time to hide a stash.

I waved a sad goodbye, knowing it would be better for Mr Candy to be gone.

Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :

Alice, I prefer it dehydrated. Both are acceptable ways to make them. They shrink either way .... lots of water in veggies!

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

Alice - they say the dehydrating is much healthier because it's at a lower temperature and allows the enzymes to stay "alive".

I'm super interested now in making the kale chips, now that I've read this thread. Thanks for the info, everyone. I'm hoping to try making some today or tomorrow. I'll start with baked because it's faster and easier, and if I have success then I'll move on to the dehydrator.

Plus I haven't used my oven in about 6 months (ever since I got Lyme!), so it's getting pretty lonely. [Smile]

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

BTW - about the Halloween candies: I'm surprised that a lot of you peeps were worrying about the sugar in the candies, but nobody mentioned all the other poisons. Aren't you worried about the hydrogenated oils, and the artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives?

Overall, I'd be most worried about the hydrogenated oils. That garbage poisons every cell in your body.

James what dehydrator are you going to get? I want one.... [Smile]

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

I think I already have an Excaliber 8-tray. I haven't used it in years, though, so I'm wondering if maybe I gave it away.

I'm not sure what the good types are, because I haven't studied them in years. But I know when I first bought it I did a lot of studying, so I'm guessing the Excaliber must be decent.

I think Scorpio asked about what type I have, too. I hope she sees this.

If I find my old machine, I'll test it on the kale chips and post a review. I might look for it tonight or tomorrow.

I found my Excalibur dehydrator!
[woohoo]

I guess it looks like it actually has 9 trays. It still has pieces dried pineapple chunks stuck on the trays from about 4 years ago. You think I should eat them? [Big Grin]

Yup, I've certainly had my fill of candy. Glad to know I'm not alone. Back to veggies tomorrow. : )

Dude, how OLD is your unit? LOL... I have only came across the 4 trays, 5 trays and 9 trays. Where on earth did you get the 8 trays.

I was about to get the 9 trays... but I'm not sure it's big enough. I'll have to do a little more research.

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

Scorpio - you silly girl! Look a couple posts down and you'll see that I finally found my unit, and I discovered that it has 9 trays. Actually, I'm surprised that my memory of the number of trays was so close, since it's been such a long time. [Smile]

I might make some dehydrated kale chips today if I get to it. I'm not sure, though, because for some reason I woke up at 3am, so I might be tired.

Waking up at 3 AM can be a toxic liver .... maybe some extra kale for you today!

Posted by kam (Member # 3410) on :

Saw raisnettes on sale at the grocery store so picked up a package.

Had 3 small packages of it. Right eye did that crying thing it does when I have sugar. Weird.

At least I did not get the pain that usually goes with it as if I were poked in the eye with a stick.

Hoping I can limit myself to one small package a day now. If not, I will need to remove the temptation from the house.

Hey Six, you're the second person who mentioned that. My friend said something about the liver detoxes around 1-3am (my memory is faulty so don't quote me). So James sounds like you need to make more Kale today!

Can you try using your Dehydrator again and let me know if you like it? I about to pull the trigger... but I can't tell if the trays are plastic or not? My friend has the commercial unit which is the size of a dish washer! I don't have that kind of room in my kitchen... so how big is this 9 trays thing anyway? Do tell!

sixgoofy & scorpio - I drank the juice of 3 bunches of kale yesterday, plus I ate that tray of baked kale chips! I'm gonna start having kale come out of my ears if I eat any more. [Smile]

My biggest theory about waking up early was that maybe it was because I drank a lot of veggie juice just before sleep. Maybe it messed up my blood-sugar levels?

Scorpio - here's the one I have:
http://www.amazon.com/Excalibur-3900-Deluxe-Tray-Dehydrator/dp/B001P2J3K0/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1320338826&sr=1-1
The page says it's 17x19x12.5.

I don't know if I'm feeling up to making kale chips today, so maybe tomorrow.

I get blamed whenever Whole Foods is out of kale here. It's not my fault. Really. It's not.

Could be the blood sugar, James, but if it happens regularly, I'd suspect the liver. Circadian rhythm is an interesting thing to study.

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

alice - that's funny that the movie made kale so much popular! [Smile] At least it means that quite a few people are willing to change to healthier diets.

sixgoofy - thanks for the info on the liver. I had actually never heard that before.

Yeah, I'm super interested in circadian rhythms. I've found that it's best to sleep all at once at night, and to never take naps. Well, at least for some people. I always have a messed up mood whenever I wake up from a nap.

Hmmm... if I feel trigger happy one day, I might paint a picture of sixgoofy hauling out huge piles of kale from Whole Foods. [Smile] You wouldn't mind, would you Six?

I just love how words can turn into other words -

candy
kandy
kaldy
kaldyp
kaldyip
kaldyhip
kaldychip
kaleychip
kalechip
kale chip

and that's how it's done - [Big Grin]

Alice, try Henry's (Sprouts now I guess). They have a nice selection of Organic Kale! I just bought 4 bunches yesterday and there were still plenty left.

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

Alice - just be careful with the coconuts! Those things are dangerous when you're trying to open them.

If someone knows a good Coconut-Opener, I'd love to buy one. I want a machine where you just put the coconut in one end, and the while flesh comes out the other.

Posted by scorpiogirl (Member # 31907) on :

Yes Alice you can find young coconut at Henry's too. The put them near the salad packages.

I buy mine from a Korean Market in cases (9 pieces per box). Cheaper that way since we consume so much of it.

Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :

Alice - NO! I already wrote to you the story of how I sliced my finger! Sheesh. And you were the ONLY person I ever told on the ENTIRE forum!! [rant] Did you forget already? Well, maybe it's a good thing. [Smile]

Scorpio (AKA "Coconut Queen"): What's the difference between the "young coconuts" that you're always writing about, and the "regular" coconuts?

Posted by scorpiogirl (Member # 31907) on :

Young coconuts vs. old (brown) coconuts.

http://www.google.com/search?q=young+coconuts&hl=en&biw=1280&bih=624&prmd=imvnse&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=Ez-zTqjsKqXViALZ1ZFo&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CEsQ_AUoAQ

You can drink and eat meat from the young coconuts, but you cannot (or should NOT drink from the old or mature coconuts). The meat in the mature coconuts are much thicker and much harder to get out! I would NOT recommend anyone especially James to try this! While I love the mature coconut's meat it's way too much work to get it out. So I don't do it as often as I would like.
