As a moderator I see things that happen that the rest of the board does not see. Remember this is a PUBLIC message board.

DO NOT say things here you don't want to be PUBLIC. Anyone can read this and not everyone has good intentions.

This is the internet. Use internet safety. If you have kids, you talk to them about people not being who they seem on the internet. Remember that basic safety here, too.

I'm not implying that there have been big problems, I just think people forget about this here ... that people forget this is not a private forum.

What scares me is how many will come here and post their email addresses and full names.... or phone numbers. [Eek!]

Last to chime in here...

be careful with the PM's. They may not really be a friend and trying to get information.

Not to get TOO big brotherish, but we have to be smart.

Yes, and please be careful with the stalkers. I can't tell you how many women have tried to hook up with me these past few weeks.

Just kidding.

Exactly, and be careful of the poster names James1979, he's a little bit kooky!! You are in danger of laughing if he's around!

You can not be too careful. That is a fact! The moderators know of what they speak.

At least this time they do!

HA!

Oh, and James, so nice to see you are having so much fun here at "Let's Make a Lyme Date".

We really should write to Lou and thank him for setting up this unique, and free, dating site for you.

Whatever you missed, I missed too. Something must have happened under the moderator's radar that we are not privy to.

Hope no one was harmed in anyway.

Sexual predators try to sign on many different "chat rooms" every day. They try to "groom" their prey by pretending to be nice, buddy up, etc.

Every site. Every day. Human trafficking is a horrendously harsh reality that occurs just about everywhere.

That is just one thing to consider.

Other than that, home theft, child abduction (for reasons other than trafficking, medicine theft (following someone to the drug store to rob them in the parking lot) . . . these things also have happened from details posted over the web, even from sites that seem benign.

And there are also "lesser" degree of crime - those who pretend to get close, have a disaster and need cash. Pretend is the key word here but, they, too, often groom their prey.

The moderators do an excellent job of screening out the criminal element.

Once in a while, curious about a new member (there's a little link off to the right side on the open menu) and if there's a name that seems very unusual and I wonder if there's a explanation of why they chose that name, I have gone to their profile to see a link that is very clearly sexual & potentially criminal. They don't even hide it.

A while back, I was astounded once when I clicked onto a web link posted under a curious name who just became a member but had not yet posted. It was, indeed, a child pornography site. I informed the moderators and they said that they usually go through these each night and - yes - it takes some time.

I should have never clicked onto that link as then my computer could have been infected. But, since I did and I could clearly see that it was a criminal site - and not just posted through here but likely a many other sites - I called the police to report it.

They said they receive many calls each day for the very thing. They told me to call the FBI. And, yes, the FBI takes these sites very seriously. As the moderators (and LouB) do a good job of keeping this site safe, there is never a guarantee of another's intentions being honest.

Also, to be aware on other sites, to discuss this with the kids in our lives, this kind of awareness can help save torment and lives.

Learning a bit more about the tricks that predators use on their prey is an important education.

Just last night on our local news, there was discussion about how our interstate freeway is the primary route for human trafficking in my state. Probably, in every state.

I can see the freeway from my home. The number of people who are being "transported" across state lines - but also just from town to town - is astounding. It saddens me to know that I may be seeing cars in which some very scared souls are traveling.

So, anything we can do to keep our eyes open, whether on the web, or at rest stops, etc. it might just save a life. I tried to find the one best link for activism and could not sort through them all. Here's just a start if someone wants to learn how to help:

Grasping for straws, people in my community are casting a wide search for this precious little boy who has been missing for 18 months. It is believed that he is alive, somewhere.

Please take a look at his photos (and add 18 months' time). And, please, keep your eyes open.

Also, things less criminal and a problem .... talking too much about your LLMD. Pretend ... just pretend your LLMD reads the board. Are you saying things your doctor would want said publicly? Will your doctor feel safe having you as a patient if you're posting things too publicly?

Another thing, how much are you saying about your children? Remember, chronic Lyme doesn't exist (we all know it does, but officially it does not). Are you giving enough information to be determined to have munchausen's by proxy?

Remember the whole Lyme debate on whether it exists. There are people who read the board then learn what doctors are prescribing. They learn which activists are treating their kids (I never mentioned my own daughter getting treated until she was 18).

Keebler's internet safety comments are important, too, and the admins do go through the site regularly to remove the spam and porn, but there are even issues that are less criminal. I am not implying that they are a huge problem that we encounter regularly, but we do see this stuff. You might even read Loub's here - http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/1/108368

exactly ... and your insurance company can be looking over your shoulder as well.

(another reason NOT to post your real name here... especially as your screen name.)

Keep in mind that disability companies follow boards as well.

If you have a facebook page, be careful there. All insurance companies are using "social media" to deny claims, medical, disability and others.

The less said the better, all around.

There has been some devastation due to this very subject. Right on this website, through this forum.

A member was viciously attacked by an unknown person, not in the physical sense, but in other ways. Someone who read a post by this member, traced the member through the signature, a website (the member's name was never posted!) Yet this troll, this evil do-gooder, went through much trouble to defame and ruin the member.

The member is now financially unstable, was devastated, terminated from job, and nearly relapsed due to this underhanded troll from the forums who slandered and ruined the member's credibility.

From "supposedly" anonymous postings here, the member thought they were safe here. The member used this forum as a support group. Yet one bit of information, one tiny link to an identity, led to the demise of this faithful member.

But this member still lives and is healthy, wealthy in spirit, and much, much wiser. One might say, the battle was lost but the war is not over!

And to "Ms. Paddler", (I'm sure you are reading this) whoever you are, you evil wench , one day it will come around and bite you on your ***. Once a door is closed, a window opens somewhere else. You are the loser and people have identified you.

I'm getting a lot of PM's asking if it's them. It's not. [Smile] This is a general reminder. There are incidents every so often, as stated above by Garby, but the people they happen to, KNOW it happened.

It's just good for you guys to hear about them once in a while to know this stuff is real. Be careful on the public board. Don't be afraid to post, but be careful what you post.

ya'll know i have this friend who posts in detaill every single thing she does on her facebook.
she tells about her vacations (duh, it's easy to go rob somebody when they tell you all the stuff). about her kids, their vacations, you name it, she says it.

i keep telling her not to do this, but hey, i'm the freak who won't joint a club, give out my phone number, won't answer the door to people i don't know, won't give the credit card at restaurants, etc.

i'm just waiting for them to get robbed. facebook is ridiculous.

and only about 3 people on here know me and that's fine.

you can't hunt if you don't have a gun.

i can't imagine tho someone on this board going to such lengths to destroy a person. why? what did they have to gain? i don't understand, i really don't. how very cruel. i hope they are not doing it to other people.

They HAVE done it to other people. You can't guess who it is? I would say the "other side" is responsible, unless each incident is an inside job. [tsk]

Perhaps the someone on this board, this paragon of virtue, [bow] feels they hold the 'yardstick of correction' for the rest of the world and want to do a great civil service and save the world by tattling on a "mentally unstable person" (give me a break) so the person can't work anymore. [toilet]
NOT!

I agree that we must also not come on here and pull down our LLMDs. We all have our favorites and for some we are with them for a time and move on. What I don't care for is when someone decides to move on and totally bashes one of the few LLMDs we have in this country. If it didn't work out for you then move on and keep in mind that that particular physician may be a Godsend to many other people.

Last point, people get on here and bash physicians and those very physicians have NO way of defending themselves. As in everything there are two sides to every story and we only get a one sided perception here from a patient's view. The physicians have no way to explain their side. They have no way of defending their decisions, policies, protocol... So best answer to this is to move on with class and stop hurting the very ones that put so much on the line to help us.

I don't worry too much about being robbed, I have nothing to steal. If anybody stole my identity, they'd probably sue me for damages because they'd immediately start being harassed by bill collectors and their credit score would drop to a negative number.

@sk8tr, I always say there are 3 sides to every story: side 1, side 2 and the truth!

Lymetoo: Yes, it's usually a troll, but I'm not so sure on this one. I just can't figure it out, but my friend here (the member who was attacked)thinks it could be the 'other side' of our controversy cause she used to be so active in speaking out against the controversy.

We do not allow doctor bashing here. If there is bashing going on, it should be reported through the "report a post."

This is a HUGE problem. THIS is exactly why I say not to talk about your kids. The biggest threat they have against activists is child protective services for Munchausen by Proxy since chronic Lyme does not exist according to the IDSA.

I know someone who has left this board, was an activist, got identified by the other side and was reported for munchausen, her child pulled out of class and she was investigated. In fact, her child was not even in treatment.

So, the whole thing was a lie, and that state permits anonymous complaints. So, don't allow yourself to be identified on a public board. Even false accusations can cause a lot of harm.

The person who reported this didn't care if it was wrong. He intended to hurt her and cause her to drop out of activism, and he succeeded. We know who this was, and he has sent letters to the editor of newspapers describing things he has read on this forum. This person works for the government, and has been allowed to keep his job, even after all he has done. An evil man.

The case I am describing was several years ago. A more recent case may have involved the same man.

lou & sixgoofy:

And a 'man' could take on the persona of a woman, too. Like in the case of our 'Ms. Paddler'. Give me a break, a fake name like that that clearly says "paddle-her". Well, Paddler did paddle, but the victim is well and moved on.
