Does anyone else see a bad word when they see those initials? It is not that I want to see the bad word, I just do!

HA! Thanks you guys. I have wanted to post this for a long time, but I didn't have the nerve!
I am glad I am not the only one!

Yup....me too!
When I first told my mom about it, she said "the WHAT?!?!"
So, now we call it "the Mother Father" gene. Posted by Dogsandcats (Member # 28544) on :
I didn't see a thing, lymetoo teaches these terrible things to me.

I have been taken aback by it a time or two myself.

Get out of my head! I'll try to remember it as 'Mother Father' from now on Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

LOL! I'm so used to calling this the "MotherF*****" mutation. I made the grave mistake of saying just that to a new doc I recently saw.
He didn't have a clue what I was referring to. hahaha

Oh no Fuzzyslippers!! Too funny, probably wasn't funny at the time though!
Yes, the first time I saw that, I was like WHAT?? It seemed like an abbreviation for motherfer.

Hilarious Lymetoo!

FuzzySlippers, it is so funny you said this to a new doctor! I would have loved to have seen his face.

In19944, Keebler, and lymeinhell I love your interpretations of the letters!!
Great replies everyone!

I've been calling it that since I saw it and meant it after I found out I have one copy of each.

So what DOES it stand for then? I guess I am not familiar with it, but I think this thread is hilarious! Thank for a good laugh!
Posted by Catgirl (Member # 31149) on :
I totally do (ha ha)! We refer to in the swear form at our house.

The "MotherF****" genetic mutations stand for:
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR).
The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase is important for a chemical reaction involving forms of the B-vitamin folate (also called folic acid or vitamin B9). Specifically, this enzyme converts 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This reaction is required for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine to another amino acid, methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and other important compounds.
It's a pain in the patooty to have. It means that we have great difficulty detoxing, clearing infections, and a host of other issues, including risks during pregnancy, etc. Our bodies do not utilize Folic Acid so we have to take, among other things, methylated forms called L-Methylfolate.
Basically, our body's Methylation Pathways are screwed up because of inherited genetic mutations.
To describe it, makes it sound like some version of an Alien Body Snatcher movie or something.
There's a lot more to it than what I've described. But I'm just not good at summarizing things anymore.

In reference to people seeing MTHFR as days of the week . . . .
Yup, did a double-take first time I saw it!
Posted by lyme in Putnam (Member # 11561) on :
But we really mean it (I know I do) .
Posted by searching4truth (Member # 28481) on :
Fuzzyslipper, Wow! I think you did a great job summarizing it! Thank you. How do you know if you have this gene mutation?
