Bout this time yesterday was sitting right here and noticed funny shadows on the grass.

Said somebody next door must be grilling in middle of afternoon. Finally after increased shadows went outside and looked up

911 later we had lots of visitors as the flames crawled up the outside wall.

They of course tore up things pretty good making sure all was put out

No north wall to speak of and little roof left. Apartment next door had same hole in wall, roof and same smoke issues

did get to meet my neighbor living right across the hall and I thought it was vacant,,,never comes and goes.

Anyway new mother and 6 week old baby was living in the burned apartment. All made it out okay but another few minutes and maybe not,,,they were sleeping.

VERY hot for firemen in full gear. They sent us all packing for the night till City inspector gadget gave the all clear today

Excitement I really didnt need. BUT better than middle of the night.

And as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades

So sorry your apartment building caught on fire. But I am glad you are okay.

Do you have a place to stay? I take it your apartment is badly damaged?

Oh dear, that's awful.
Are you saying that YOUR living quarters were damaged?

I'm glad that you are okay.

YIKES, don!! Glad you are OK... so how IS your apartment?

no damage to mine, seperated by hallway so smoke didnt come over.

Altho my hallway dont smell too good. I would think they would open all doors and windows to get smoke smell out.

Well I thunk wrong, Servicemaster cleaning company was here before the firemen left BUT dont think they did much to my neighbors place across the hall.

News said 2 apartment extensive damage(an understatement) people have been carrying out stuff all day. News also said 4 apartments under those recieved water damage.

I didnt see damage of water from peering in the door but the smoke was so thick could not see much

I am sure all 5 apartments plus the vacant one will be unavailable for a while. They are built 3 high here. 2 ground floor apartments, one from front, one from back,,and an upper level up one flight of stairs

it was 2 upper level apartments joined in the middle by a fire wall.

People living there said alarms didnt sound in their place or neighbors,,,wonder why....Reminds me to check mine.

Glad to hear no apparent damage to your quarters. Hope there is no structural damage in your building but also that your place, somehow, will not smell of smoke.

That smoke smell can be nearly impossible to remove. An ozone machine MAY be able to help and some health stores have those to rent.

If you have renters' insurance, some professional smoke remediation may be covered but it should be done (or advised) by experts in this area - not just anyone. Smoke changes the task.

I once bought several clothing items at a smoke sale and washed and washed and washed and washed and the smoke never left.

I had to throw them all out. But that was over 25 years ago. I did use all kinds of strong detergents, etc. but there may be better methods now.

Be sure to get great ADRENAL SUPPORT now and for a while. Your internal "alarm" system has likely been set to overdrive.

Good luck.

YOU ARE SO FORTUNATE!!!! Get renter's insurance if you don't have it.

Ours is attached to our car insurance policy. It is less than $15 a month.

I bought mine yesterday afternoon after the event. Cost me 10 a month for replacement cost,,,been a long time since I rented anything

Spent the last 4 or 5 hours after I last posted,,,,helping my neighbor upstairs move his stuff out his burnt hole in the wall apartment.

Management is trying to blame people living there saying fire started outside on their deck and moved in. I know for a fact not true

I knew you'd be out there helping neighbors!!

They had a news piece on TV tonight about several recent fires in Sprfld and said now they are building apts without balconies. Too many HAVE been started that way (smokers).

Sorry Don. A lot more fun ways to have excitement in your life!
I am glad you are alright. Take care.

Thank God you're ok and that there were no fatalities. [Smile]

I always knew you were "HOT", but didn't know you were THAT hot! Good grief! Glad you and others are ok!

NOW- get busy my dear Just Don! I want you to put smoke detectors in each room in your place and in the hall way on the ceiling outside your door.

I know, its overkill. But better than being KILLED!

And, knowing you are the wonderful fellow you are, it wouldn't hurt to offer to install smoke detectors in others places.

But before you do... PLEASE be sure to read the instructions. Need to be X feet from corners, walls, etc. Away from ceiling fans too.

And NOT electric detectors. Regular battery operated ones. I know, picky picky me.

But, do it and I will [Big Grin]

Thanks!

Ms. Safety

Wow Close Call. Glad you are ok.

I have lived in several apartment buildings. I am always aware that some dummy might start a fire and try to choose places with firebrick walls.

Generally, a "no grills" rule comes with the leases here.

But of course the new building Superintendant doesn't think that applies to him! He parked a grill under my living room air conditioner, and after getting little response, other than that he moved it 10 feet further from the window, I complained to the landlord.

Renters insurance does not replace heirlooms and photos. An ounce of prevention ...

Again, glad to hear you are safe.

We have sprinklers here and fire alarms...even the water heater has an alarm if it starts to leak??

That was a new one for me.

guessing you don't have sprinklers in your ceiling there or you would have had water damage too.

Glad you are OK. Yes. You don't need that kidn of excitement. Ugh. Close one.

We just had a HUGE fire in our area yesterday. Total loss. They still have not put out the fire, I don't think.

Four story condos on the lake. BIG place. Burned to the ground.

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

They now think it started on a BALCONY.

I wonder if people are smoking and then throwing their cigarette butts out and they land on another balcony below them??

Burning cigarettes or ashes in a plastic trash on someone's deck started a fire near here last year. There was also paper in the can and melted the plastic so the fire spread.

The year before, next door:

Some people had a grill on a balcony (which they should never do, even with a gas canister) but then have the grill too close to the wall or under a balcony. Sparks can fly even from a gas grill, too.

I think it was all fine but they left the grill then sitting next to the wall afterward, still hot and just left.

We still laugh about nearly burning down our house when barbecuing fajita steaks. Thankfully, we LAUGH!

We had friends over and the grill was on the patio (with a cover). We removed the steaks that were done and began eating. We were supposedly "watching" the grill through the window.

OOPS... suddenly we see flames shooting out of the grill! I can't remember if we had to use the water hose or not. But we were all young and stupid and laughed like crazy.

We still visit those friends when we go back to South Texas.

One of the reasons they caught fire is that fajita meat is very fatty. The fat is what caught fire.

Just saw this - lucky you for making it through this one - we've had a couple fires here in the past couple weeks too - takes quick action to protect everyone -

Oh no, <<<<< Just Don >>>>>,

Wow, Thanking the Lord you are okay, and no one seriously injured.

That is really frightening, we are still nervous here, after the 'Charlotte fire' across the highway from us.

There was/were 66 homes destroyed.

So very glad you are safe!!!

Jus' that Silverwolfi here.

and the beat keeps going on-------this morning rose to( 4 AM) squish squish squish. says my little hallway carpets

seems the a/c line was plugged and water .

I called the place twice,,,first time said they had a extractor they could get all of it sucked up,,,,they didnt even try

called back to see where they were,no answer, left message,,we will see!

MOST important thing on fire,,,whole 3 stories full of apartments ,,and not one smoke detector went off.

Don, happy to hear you are fine.Sorry, to hear about the fire in your apartment building. If they don't suck up that water fast, you are going to have mold growing. Then everyone will have problems.

Oh, by the way, if you decide to put up smoke detectors, please be careful on the ladder !!

things are good this week, no fires, no soaked carpet,,,no excess gravity causing raining garbage from above

Just so darn tired from third day in a row of 5 AM starts and run run run all day and get off from second job at like 7 PM or later.

Got one more day of this, may cash in early tonight. -Its miserable running the big machine when your really tired.

Its so boring- you can fall asleep very easy,,,then bad things happen quick

Its either feast or famine on getting enough hours to work on my second job. Keep getting promised more and getting less!!!
