Seriously..The ease at which I can get treatment for my Golden Retriever is crazy - in a good way.
She has had some form of a TBI every year or more of her life and I saw the signs again last week.
I take her in to see my darling Vet - who I call her LLDVD - and based on clinical presentation he gives her 500 mgs. of Doxy per day. Standard dose for her 60 lbs.
Yes he tested as well, but sent me home with the meds before gettting a positive test result. Gee, maybe I'd be better off as a dog.
BTW..he is using something different from the 4DX testing. Forget the name but it is more senstive and tests for more co.'s then the 4DX.
So, really...my dog can get tx for TBI's THAT easily but we can't. Not trying to upset anyone here, just making commentary on how screwed up our medical system is.
I wish my Vet was an MD.

Know what you mean. Hope your dog gets better soon. My vet was really up to snuff with lyme and co-infection info. In fact, he and his dog and son got Rickettsia this year.

- It may still depend upon which state you are in. Recently someone from Oregon posted that her vet denied lyme is even in that state (right along with their state medical board, denying lyme for people).
Even with a positive test for her dog, her vet would not treat beyond a drop in the bucket and a dismissal. He used steroids which made it so much worse, too.
Her dog did get better, they found a different vet.
Topic: now my dog has lyme disease too, and vets won't help -

Yes was a vet tech and even 5 years ago was much easier.....btw, what tick prevention are you using? Might want to address that to prevent new infections.

I have noticed that my dog gets feeling better in days.. No herx - just better.
I do not use tick prevention on her anymore. She had an adverse reaction to the tick collar a few years ago and our Vet said not to use it again.
Any ideas on natural prevention for dogs????

Most dogs I have worked with do not herx. I even asked vets this question. they told me no. a few dogs do get horrible kidney issues and I remember one of our patients in ICU died from tick paralysis. but over all they do better.
I think prevention is the biggest most important thing you can do. I dont vaccinate my dogs for lyme (its the old human one taken off the market)
My dog lived to be 16. Just put him down a few months ago (RIP. MAXY) HE NEVER got lyme and my other Dogs dont either. Sorry but I believe in the hard hitting topicals. for dogs K9 advantix has been tremendous for my dogs for years. my ts get frontline they cant use advantix.
The advantix does not go systemic. it stays in the oil glands. its safe enough to apply weekly in a crisis.... the only issue I have seen was some local skin irritation, and fleas seem to be getting immune to what we have now.
Dont forget not only is your dog unprotected from TBI and getting infected repeatedly ths dog is likely bringing the ticks right in your house.
I dont know what collar you used, but between frontline and advantix your dog should do fine on one. there are other products coming out too.
Ticks are out if its 35 Degrees or warmer. a friend just had 5 Tick bites last week. I dont think natural products work well I have tried.
do your dig and your family a favor and get the goodstuff.
and STAY AWAY from all hartz products.

I believe the collar we used that caused her to have sezuire like activity was a Hartz.
Yes, the ticks are out like crazy again....My entire family is treating now. We live in a hot zone.
I will ask my Vet about Advantix since you mentioned it does not go systemic. My question though is does it need to go systemic to be effective?

One of our support group members has a sick dog. I asked why he didn't think the dog had lyme & co if he got it on his property?
He said his dog had the vaccination therefore it couldn't have lyme? So can dogs still get it with continual exposure?
This person is also positive for bart and babs, so why wouldn't the dog be suspect for these also. The dog is having terrible kidney issues.
Any thoughts?

I highly suggest NOT. vaccinating for lyme. when I was working, about 5 1/2 years ago the vaccine for dogs was the old human one that got pulled of the market!!!!! My dog lived to 16 lyme free thanks to advantix. The product does not need to be systemic to work. You can also call bayer animal health and ask any q's about the product. If for some remote chance your dog had a problem from advantix that needed medical care, advantix will pay for it if a vet says it was advantix related.

Back 5 years ago there was controversey about vaccjnation for lyme and testing. dogs vaccinated would test positive. If it were my dog and he had typical lyme symptoms and kidney issues, I would treat longterm with abx

My understanding is that the 4DX test can differentiate between an active lyme infection and a positive from the vaccination.
My Vet uses the 4DX and compares levels from one test to another. He is using another /newer test now which I cannot recall the name.
I was told by my Vet that the vaccination they use is NOT the same one that was used on humans that pulled off the market - which by the way I had that vaccination.

They were working on a different vaccine when I left. Somaybe there is a new one now. The 4dx 5 years ago did not differentiate.
basically if it was positive a spot turned blue. Kinda like a pregnancy test. Some docs would look at how blue or how quick the spot turned blue. but there was no number that compared levels. Maybe its different now. I will have to do some reading.
But Def 5 years ago the vaccine WAS the vaccine pulled from the human market.
