The second was being in an accident in Utah with the end result of a severely broken leg. I owe many people a huge amount of gratitude for their time, support, and monetary help to save my life and get me home. I have a long recovery and hope Lyme does not rear its ugly head during the healing process.

Fatherguido: So, so very sorry your friend passed away at such a young age from Lyme. Once again, another tragedy that should not happen in the USA in 2012.
I hope your leg heals soon and you regain your strength.

The obituary lists donations to ALS society. Guess this was lyme caused ALS. Very frightening.

So sorry about your friend. Tragic and unnecessary. My heart goes out to her family and friends.
And a car wreck, too! If bad things come in threes, you should stay in bed. Oh, wait. You have a broken leg. What a great opportunity to rest and recover and avoid a nasty Lyme flare.

That sucks about my friend Carmella passing away. She was the only one I ever knew who had Lyme. So when I contracted the disease, my diagnosis scared the hell out of me because she was already in pretty bad shape.
It was a parachuting accident and not a car wreck which busted up my leg.
My friends (unknowingly to me) set up a PayPal fund for people to donate to my recovery and medical expenses. THEY RAISED OVER $1400! That absolutely blew me away to know I have a circle of friends and family who care.

Sorry about Carmella. It is sad and frightening when people die of Lyme and complications.
You have us, too. Not a big parachuting group here (unless there's something people aren't telling us), but we're still pretty cool.

So sad about your friend...when someone dies from lyme/complications it takes a piece of us too, since we are all in this together.
I knew you were looking so forward to the parachuting competion and am bummed out that it went badly for you.
On the other hand, you are a testament to us and a reminder that those very sick with lyme can actually get better and achieve their goals.
So hang in there fatherguido...your story isn't over yet and hope to hear updates on your recovery.

Thank you all for the kind words.
Being busted up has given me time to think about priorities in life. The BASE jumping will come to an end. The skydiving will not but am undecided whether I want to compete anymore.
What I did want to do after retuning home was to spend more time with loved ones (kids, mother, sister, friends, and girlfriend) but that is on hold. We were training so hard for six months that I had time for practice and work, not much else. I also had some nice Winter home renovation projects which get put on hold during recovery.
Anyway, my leg is still pretty busted up and must wait for the swelling to go down before they can operate to fix. It will not be an easy recovery and there is risk. I have one of the best ortho surgeons in the region which is reassuring.

Also, parachuting.. with friends like yours setting up a PayPal fund for you.. who needs parachuting?
That in itself is such a sky-high feeling !! What a blessing in such unfortunate circumstances !

Since my original post three weeks ago, here is my broken leg update from the ortho doctor. I expected he would tell me to wait a few more weeks for the swelling to reduce before they can operate to install a plate and pins.
However, I was given unexpectedly GOOD news. The doctor feels it is not necessary to operate based on my progress over the last three weeks since the initial operation. Another surgery right now would increase the risk of infection and probably not give any additional bone support. He would also have to rebreak everything that has already healed and so my recovery would start from scratch again.
I still have a long way to recover and there is still risk that lingers. This is better news than I ever expected to hear.
Not bad for an old fart, eh?

I'm so glad to hear that you won't need surgery.
You can speed healing by using a SOTA Magnetic Pulser on the leg.
JustDon had a horrible fracture, and had several long metal pins sticking out of his ankle for many weeks. He got treated with LED light therapy, which brought down the swelling and sped up bone healing.

Carol, I have those same crazy pins sticking out of my leg right now. My next appointment is on December 20th to remove the pins and X-brace and for them to put on a cast.
I have several questions to ask the doctor on the next visit and a stimulator is one of them.
