Just have to vent it out. On day 15 post molar extraction and bone graft. Got the dreaded dry socket. The extraction was a surgical one and took 2.5 hours - not an easy procedure.
Getting it packed with clove oil every day or so. This is one of the most painful things I ever experienced in my life - no kidding. Like cannot explain the kind of pain.
I have been on Percocet and Motrin for the entire time now and hate hate hate how they make me feel. Today is the first day I took nothing and I am suffering for it right now.
Anyone out there ever have post extraction dry socket? Any advice? Mine took 8 days to diagnose so I am on day 6 of treatment for it.
On a good note I don't think I am having any lyme/co. flares from the procedure thanks to Clindamycin! DW

Hi, I had my wisdom teeth removed about 7 years ago. They had to break my jaw to get one of them out. The whole thing took like 2 hours. I don't believe I had dry socket but was in extreme pain. My dentist said I could do Tylenol with codeine and then 2 hours later do 4 motrin. You should talk to your dentist or LLMD. I iced my face for about 3 days. I also did salt water gargles.
My face felt like someone had hit it with a bat.
I heard Tindimax and Flagyl are good for bone infection...maybe talk to your LLMD. Zithromax seems to also be another good option as is clindamycin.

Yeah, been doing all the above and I think it is SLOWLY getting better.
Doing warm salt water rinses, ice, daily clove packing, pain meds (Percocet and 600 mg Motrin), and Clindamycin. I have both Flagyl and Tindamx that I could add to the mix. Also have Biaxin on hand.
My OS says no infections and all looks well "except" for the dry socket. He explained how he cleaned out the socket and jaw to make room for the bone graft but there was no infection in there. Not sure why I don't believe him....
I wish I never had the extraction and just kept the dead cracked root canaled tooth in my jaw.

I had one of those once and the dentist gave me some heavy-duty pain meds.
Do you think he might prescribe something to get you over the hump?

Hey Linky; Thanks. Yes, my OS has me on 10 mg.s of Percocet plus 800 mg.s of Motrin. Today was a better day and only needed a little motrin. Big exhale...I think/hope the worst is over!

DW im so sorry this is still going on. i feel guilty mine went so well...but it was an easy extraction with short roots. tomorrow will be a week and i am still taking high dose ibuprofen, skelaxin and neurontin...and when it it time to take more i feel it...but nothing like you describe
could a nerve med like neurontin help you with the other drugs?
im just so sorry and hope it gets better soon.
yrs ago i had a bout with trigeminal neuralgia for 3 wks and i thought that was the worst pain in the world...but yours sounds worse

I've heard about the dreaded "dry socket" for years. Never knew it was that painful. OUCH!

Thanks guys:)..... Yes, I had zooster on my face (thank you Lyme) years ago and this is kinda like that but in my mouth / jaw. Ewww..you can literally see exposed bone. These things can happen and I am thankful to have a doc who understands and will pack it everyday and is not afraid to give me the heavy hitter pain meds.
Thanks for reminding me about the neurontin. I have a stash and will take some tonight as I think that will help w/ some of the remaining nerve pain radiating into other teeth and face.
Gosh, please don't feel bad! I am so happy for you that your procedure went well! Even then it is still no walk in then park. I hope you continue to heal well.

Thanks. Yeah...Just got back from the OS and he put new packing in - I smell like a clove oil factory! I get a pretty nasty headache after he puts the packing in - I like to think I am killing parasites:).
BTW.. I took 300 mg.'s of Neurontin last night and slept like a baby w/ minimal nerve pain. I know that is a very small dose but I am a med lightweight so I don't need a lot. OS said to give it a try as well. Thanks for the tip!
I still have exposed bone and nerves but am beginning to heal up a bit. Next week no more packing as the gum has to close. This is 17 days post extraction! Healing is there but slow.

I had a horrible time with one last year. I was at the OS every fewdays for packing changes for a few weeks. They said if it didn't close soon they would look into doing a bone scan. Fortunately it did. It is very painful, but will get better.
