For years we have put Orthomax or Sevin pesticides on our lawn. It worked great for killing ticks. I am looking for something natural for the lawn because I would like to stop using the toxic pesticides.

we just got tick tubes. shall see if it works. and i just ordered some bug spray but that will be goig on our clothes, not the grasss- we have a dog.

About 1/2 way down this page is an article- Prevention is the Key, then below it is another- Creating A Safe Zone.
A Safe Zone would minimize the application of the pesticides.
I dont know of any natural things that can do as well- even close- to the Sevin.
Since you can (I don't but you can) eat garden veggies just days after a Sevin application, and can put the Sevin dust in a dogs bedding- and it has very little smell compared to the other chemicals-- it seems to me it is the lesser evil of the evils.
My other thought- and I do not like to have to use any chemicals on the yard- is I`d rather use the Sevin, especially where you live, than have to put toxins (antibiotics) in me or my family after getting sick.
And one bottle of Sevin is MUCH less expensive than a doctor`s appointment and the medication.
Another spray you can use that is so benign it is labeled for inside homes, resturants,
and food processing plants,,,is Tempo sl or sc,forget which.
It smells like water only when spraying. Its made from flowers so pretty tame earth wise.
Another is diamacious earth which is a powder that is labeled for internal ingestion for parasites (if its food grade)
There is a local business that ships it worldwide. Sells from small amounts to 50 pound bags..
There is also some people who claim that sprays or whatever made of "orange" products work but dont know if they kill or repel,,never used them myself.

Dang! Had I known Just Don Deere Green said something nice about me, I wouldn't have tormented him so badly in the Kale 4 Sale post.
As for the orange stuff he mentioned- I know they keep removing the products with orange rind off the market. I had a hard plastic tube that had orange stuff for cleaning hands in it and it ate through the plastic!!! Tough stuff!
And my Pine-Sol orange scent cleaner (that I loved) in stores is all but non-existent now. Can still be purchased on the internet, but I`ve checked all sorts of stores in 3 different states and it is gone!
I was looking up this bug control product the other night, Orange Guard, and went to get some to try- WalMart- and they didn't have it. You can find it on Amazon though.
Has anyone here tried it? A lot of good reviews on it on Amazon.

It just NOW occurred to me that the ants I had so much trouble with for years might now be gone due to the Pine-Sol Orange cleaner. I put it in a spray bottle mixed with water to clean counters and sinks, etc., and used it to scrub floors too.
Then wondered recently why the ants were now gone? Who knows, but it might be worth a try???

A local company is advertising a natural misting agent that will place a barrier around your property and terminate any existing mosquitoes or ticks.
She said it is an enzyme that they use, I think,that breaks down their exoskeletons. It is a green company.
Darn, it is that automatic spell check again!!!! Guess I will just have to call you Decorator from now on?

We use a company that sprays permethrin in our yard several times from Spring to Fall. I don't have complete faith that this eliminates ticks. We keep the grass very short and actually try to avoid walking on it. I no longer garden.
I can't do the hell thing again, so if that means never walking on grass or going to a public park again, I'm good with that.

Spraying would freak me out as badly as walking on grass. Dekrator's link looks like a good alternative.

Keebler and LT - the spray is "heavy" for lack of a better word, and done close to the ground. There is little if any residue going anywhere beyond my property and certainly nowhere near neighbor's windows or doors. Even if it did, it's permethrin, not a pesticide.

Thank you for all the replies. I forgot I posted this and am just remembering to check it now...damn Lyme!
I will start looking at all your suggestions now. We have a dog so that is always a concern when choosing what to put on the lawn. We have a well and are concerned about what we are contaminating our water with.
Also, we used to use Sevin powder, but cannot find it in our area so we switched to the Orthomax. For those of you who use Sevin do you buy it local or online.

Do not let any animals walk on the lawn shedding ticks.
I once had rabbits galore ticks everywere. they were scratching off ticks.
They were so gross and sick.They were almost bald from scratching themselves.
They had every age and size tick lineing their ears.Fleas also would jump off ,abandoning ship!!!!
SICK SICK RABBITS!!!!!!!!!!!
I shot 59 the first year 39 the next 29 the year after that. I had a dead animal pile.
Then came the coyoties and finished the job.
Probably liked my animal pile
I have 0 ticks here now not a one.
