Timeline of response to Hurricane Katrina

Associated Press

Aug. 24 - Tropical Depression 12 strengthens into Tropical Storm Katrina over Central Bahamas; a hurricane warning is issued for the southeastern Florida coast.

Aug. 25 - Hurricane Katrina strikes Florida.

Aug. 26 - Katrina weakens over land to tropical storm before moving over Gulf of Mexico. It grows to Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds, veering north and west toward Mississippi and Louisiana. 10,000 National Guard troops dispatched across Gulf Coast.

Aug. 27 - Eleven people dead in Florida from hurricane-related causes. Katrina becomes Category 3 storm, with 115 mph winds; hurricane warning issued for Louisiana's southeastern coast, including New Orleans. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin declares state of emergency, urges residents in low-lying areas to evacuate.

Aug. 28 - Katrina grows into a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds. Nagin orders mandatory evacuation for New Orleans, but 10 shelters also set up, including Superdome.

Aug. 29 - Katrina, a Category 4 hurricane with 145 mph winds, makes landfall near Buras, La. President Bush makes emergency disaster declarations for Louisiana and Mississippi, freeing federal funds. Katrina rips two holes in Superdome roof. One New Orleans levee breaks.

Aug. 30 - Hurricane death toll in Mississippi rises to more than 100. Second levee breaks in New Orleans, flooding covers 80 percent of city. Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco says everyone still in New Orleans - 50,000 to 100,000 people - must be evacuated. Crowds swell at Superdome and convention center. Rescuers in helicopters and boats pick up hundreds of stranded people. Reports of looting. Bush announces he's cutting short his vacation.

Aug.31 - Nagin estimates New Orleans' death toll is "Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands." Blanco asks White House to send more people. New Orleans police calls off search-and-rescue to combat looting. Health and Human Services secretary declares federal health emergency throughout Gulf Coast, sends medical supplies, workers. Pentagon mounts search-and-rescue, sending four Navy ships with emergency supplies. Bush flies back to Washington.

Sept. 1 - Looting, violence spreads. Military decides to increase National Guard deployment to 30,000. Outside convention center, sidewalks packed with people without food, water or medical care. New Orleans mayor issues "desperate SOS" for more buses to evacuate. Crowds at Superdome swell to 30,000 with another 25,000 at convention center. Bush asks his father and former President Clinton to lead fund-raising campaign for hurricane victims.

Sept 2 - Bush tours Gulf Coast, acknowledges failure so far of government hurricane relief efforts. Thousands of National Guardsmen arrive in New Orleans in truck convoys carrying food, water and weapons. Congress approves first $10.5 billion for immediate rescue and relief efforts. States as far away as Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming and Michigan offer to accept refugees, who fill shelters in neighboring states. More than 50 nations pledge assistance.

Sept. 3 - Bush orders more than 7,000 active duty military forces to the Gulf Coast.

Sept. 8 - U.S. turns to its allies in NATO to help bring in food and supplies for the hundreds of thousands of Americans left homeless by Katrina after many nations offering aid complain that they have received no answer from U.S. authorities about what's needed.

I think that to get a description of events this comprensive you have to go to sources that the the government would claim are "slanted". Real news is "classified information" thee days. But since what is happening in this case is happening, um, at least in some sense..., in our own country, it's much harder to label real news as some kind of 'subversive propaganda'....

In any case what has happened is tragic and inexcusable, and indeed, heads, albeit, I would bet, the wrong ones, or, perhaps, not all of the ones that should be..., are rolling.

I hope this country can change poison into medicine in this case, and reflect on what we REALLY should be doing for true national security! I'll give 'em a hint-- we do NOT need to nazify America as nush and his cronies are attempting to do. We DON't need to take away the freedoms that America is known for. We need levies that hold up in high winds. We need energy policy that holds up as petroleum reserves run low. We need ;eaders with real vision and sufficient intelligence to make the vision areality, not just a mirage.

Actually, I don't think we have to worry. The wanna-be fuhrer, though he has some of the same personal-magnitism attributes, is proving far too incompetent to pull it off, even when surrounded by highly efficient henchmen.

But the universe is watching with a very worried look in its eyes!

Dave---- thank you so much. I've wondered where a person might get a comprehensive timeline.

Do you feel or know if that site is more or less apolitical (like there could be such a thing ) Or fairly balanced?

What I mean it---- does it heavily slant things its way? And if it does where can the other side of the coin be found?

Hey Davo..

Heads will roll, but you can bet Roves initial masterminded attempts to worm the admin's way out of this one will be to take out anybody they can to protect
the executive branch.
(there is a special coming up on him on WorldLink TV)

Brown, even, only got sent home, but he is still head of FEMA [dizzy]

I bet the Mayor of N.O. and the Governor are prime for the same kinds of attacks as others in their path in the past..
only worse. I hope they can effectively watch their backs..literally..

There MUST be an independant investigation if we are to have any hope of getting at any truth.

And we must work to make sure those findings are not buried like those of 911 commision were.
The 911 commission is public domain, yet few people have read it.
Too many imposed diversions..
I blame Dems and Repubs alike for allowing this admin to continue unnacountable.

They in Congress are all at non-paritsan fault as far as I am concerned. All so worried about 2008 to stand up and protect Americans as is costs us a billion dollars a day that we don't have in an unjust War that has accomplished nothing other than great harm, and now this.
We are in deep trouble.

The universe, or God -- I'm sure...sees all.

I have a dear freind who lives in a 3rd World country, and he has worried about my family's safety here for the past few years. He has suggested for the past year that we leave.
I think about it.

Now it is ten-fold.

He writes of how the locals, villagers, residents of his country as a whole see America as imploding..

THEY are worried about OUR safety..

under this administration, and also wonder if too much damage has been done to hope to correct.

This before and after this latest horrible disaster.

That is how the majority of World views us.
..and I'm sure there are many that don't care, or care to look at why.

American's need to wake up. It's our children's only hope.

Assuming we are invinsable without holding our leaders ac****able in a logical, realistic way (looking beyond propaganda and foolish pride) is the biggest danger to us now.

We are all accountable IMO.

ROVE at his BEST!!!

We are in trouble w/this guy ROVE directing our country.I don't think Rove has one ounce of compassion or interest in dealing w/poverty in America.

ROVE is the main one preparing the dynamite, has placed each piece w/in our social fabric, protecting only crony interests.

Folks, the implosion is set and in some cases has started. Thanks Karl.

He's a monster.

Every campaign or admin he has ever been involved with had been rabid against opponents and dissenters..
this one is no different.
They work to fuel public hate toward people and ideas.

I also don't think people realize almost everything out of the GW'a mouth is directed by Rove.

..as well as the media they control, and the White House PR.

Nagin has been very outspoken.

It's good to see things getting back to normal. Vicious attacks by mo against anyone! Carless helps where he can. They should'd knoded the levees were gona break and the sewers were gona back up. It is gratifying to see the left hasn't improved their ``creative'' writing against those they hate. God help us if they ever become believable or so opaque you can't see through the smoke! Aaand as per usual, no plan, just *****, complain, whine and snivel!

Hey Raticus Mathmaticus!

How be you? I take that to mean you've missed me..

One thing that really should be dropped by now is this rediculous blow off goven to people with any info one may not want to consider..
to call them 'vicious Bush hating attackers' or whatever.

That, too, is straight from Rove to White House, to Rush, to you... my friend.

It's as much a problem as all the rest of it.

There is a huge difference between 'vicious attack' and raising issue with our leaders, and holding them accountable.

That used to be an American freedom..but no longer, it's set up so the Bush party supporters have at anyone saying the 'wrong thing.'
Never look at issues, just trash the messenger as much as you can.
The whole admin PR, catch phrases, campaigns..are geared toward influencing (some) citizens to be the henchmen of the govt in this regard.

With a little push from Rush, Hannity, and O'Reily..

Truly unreal..how many things and the depth of those things pushed aside by manipulation of public emotion, anger, pride, ect.

LOL, monster Rove. That's a new one. So what you're saying is that Rove is also behind all the hate and lies pushed by moveon.org and other far left orgs?????? He attacks himself? [Smile] I think the far left is 100 times more spiteful than anyone on the far right. That's a fact. Just look at how many active far left orgs are out there now. They out number the right's wacko orgs by far.

I'm not sirprised you defend Rove..
but it's documented, pretty much as rabid and manipulative of the masses as it gets.

If anyone were to research him, (tho, the majority of the country has been manipulated into never cracking open the 911 commision, so why bother with Rove)

But if they did, they would be decidedly disturbed.

Chuckster..
I'm not telling where he is [Razz]

'snot boston or Berkley..bonafied 3rd world country..
and since I may well be taking up residence there, depending...

(gotta do what I gotta do for the kiddos as always..bottom line.)

......I'm gonna keep location under my hat [hi]

Who knows, maybe I'll find Dear ShopRaticus.........

Any chance the Libertarian party will rise?
Seems our only hope at the moment... on second thought -- I think there needs to be a whole new party.
Scr&w these bozos, every one..

Mo, your definition of 'documented' is liberal wacko commentary from the New York Times or similar outfits. I'm not stupid, I know what Rove does, but it's not anything as bad or extreme as you and your fellow anti-Bush friends portray it to be.

My very best friend and I are on different ends of the political spectrum.

We go back and forth....NEVER coming to an agreement. There's one thing I'd never do, though. Because she's my friend and I respect her, I'd never hurt her feelings.

Now Angela, a rabbit punch now and again could be taken as a sign of love, compassion, interest and understanding also could snap the neurons back in formation. After all, what could she have been thinking to take that political stance?
