That stuff is a pain to thin out. I just keep torturing myself. When I thin it I just plant in somewhere else so I have even more to thin out.

Mine is in the Sierra Nevada overlooking the Sacramento river valley. On one side, I have a neighbor about 220 feet away. On the back side, seen in the photo, there is no one for about 8 miles. There are a lot of critters up here. So far we have seen mountain lions, deer, a bear, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, jackrabbits, cottontails, hawks and owls.
It can be REALLY windy up here andI built it extra sturdy (no osb, several internal braced walls, heavy shingle,hardiplank siding). It's on a slab that took about 110 yards of concrete and I stained the slab with an acid wash. I didn't want carpet becasue the dirt is so full of iron that dust will actually levitate up to a magnet a couple of inches off the ground. It stains permanently. I've sort of taken up a "Green Acres" lifestyle with a tractor, chain saws, and about every power tool there is.

A mountain lion!!!! Would sure like to see one too. If you put in one of those old timey windmills, maybe you could go off the grid.
So, I haven't built my own house. Here is my plan book, in case anyone missed it in previous post. This is where I would start if I could take on such a project:
Article about Lloyd Kahn's house book-- uncommon, handbuilt houses. The pix in this article are not representative, I don't think. These are a bit far out, the paperbag house, for instance. The book has a lot of others, that you could actually imagine living in.
OK meg, I'll swap you. Not many mountain lions in cities.

The mountain lions cause us some anxiety. Like Meg, we are always on the lookout and don't let our little pug dogs outside without supervision. I hasn't happened around here, but several years ago two humans were killed by mountain lions in southern California. Never hike alone.

They say the moisture is great but its alot easier to 'scoop' rain.
IF you have time and inclination, the lyme chat is tonight and with any luck I might make it there a little late 'as usual'!!
You can come on real late and still find some brave souls talkin'. Heard it was about 2-3 AM before they gave up last week.
Sure would have liked to be a mouse in the corner to see what they were talkin of at 'that' time of day!!!

the lion danger thing reminded me of what indians do to minimize bengal tiger attacks.
the last person in line wears a mask of a human face on the back of the head; some glass eyes in the mask should make it all the more real-looking.
no official studies on the number of human kills by tigers with mask vs. no mask.

PAB, Beautiful house!!! If ever I pass that way again I might just peek over the interstate barrier. When heading down E-35 or I- 494 to I-94 and see if I can find or see it from there. I sure would like to go back to Eau Claire (actually Altoona) for another load of babes!! Unfortunately that was pre-lyme and I am waiting for post-lyme time to go again. By then I will be too old to drive!!! Dont those images just say it ALL, because I am --just don--

I'm only 1 mile off of I-94 (really close to the 94/694 intersection. When are you gong to Dr. C next? We are going every 8 weeks so we may see you there sometime.
I grew up in Menomonie. I made many trips to the Altoona stockyard with my dad when I was a kid.
Have you been to the Barren, WI stockyard? My dad went there a lot.
I've always wanted to live in Eau Claire. My husband has too good of a job to make any changes now.

Thanks for the bump David...ours is a little over 2500 sq ft...would be 3000 if we finished the attic bedroom, It's framed and sheathed with USED and reclaimed lumber...outside walls are 2X6 so lots of insulation.
The doors and most of the windows are used materials also.
Jenny and I drove practically all of the nails ourselves although a couple cases of beer and some BBQ got us some helpers now and then.
I'm doing a shop bldg and carport now so more pics pretty soon...anything new picturewise from you, David? I can post 'em.
See I do have a green side...

A few week ago my partner came around a turn in the private road we use to get to our house and there was a HUGE bear right in the middle of the road. Its shoulders were at the height of our Jeep Cherokee Sport. Several days later we rounded a turn in my old Beemer and there was a mountain lion whose shoulder were at around thirty inches of height was nonchalalntly crossing the road. Wow!

Hi All--
Sweet houses guys --
I plan on making a concrete Dome house in a couple of years --2 story-- Solar powered with a circle deck on the roof-
Then I can laff at tornadoes and termites-
I think I am going to sell my current house- and have it towed off and build it in current lot- central Austin Location --
I can see the new Movie studios from my house now--Lucky--
Thats my plan only time will tell - to see if I can get it done -
